Too Little Too Late - Europe’s borders are back

After one million migrants, Europe’s borders are back

“It’s basically every country for itself now,” said Mark Rhinard, an expert on the European Union at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.

The Oresund Bridge, above, spanning the Oresund Strait is pictured Nov. 12, 2015, from Lernacken, Sweden. New travel restrictions are set to be imposed by Sweden on Monday to stem a record flow of migrants, transforming the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark into a striking example of how national boundaries are re-emerging.

STOCKHOLM—Since it opened in 2000, the Oresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark has been a towering symbol of European integration and hassle-free travel across borders that people didn’t even notice were there.

On Monday new travel restrictions imposed by Sweden to stem a record flow of migrants are transforming the bridge into a striking example of how national boundaries are re-emerging. A year of clampdowns on migration and terrorism has all but killed the idea of a borderless Europe where you could drive or train-hop from Spain in the south to Norway in the north without ever having to show your passport.

“We’re turning back the clock,” said Andreas Onnerfors, who lives in Lund, on the Swedish side of the bridge. An associate professor in intellectual history, he said he’s benefited from the free flow of people and ideas across the bridge—he’s studied on both sides and taught students from both Sweden and Denmark.

“We’re going back to a time when the bridge didn’t exist,” he said, referring to the ID checkpoints being set up Monday on the Danish side for train passengers wishing to cross over to Sweden.

The move is meant to stop undocumented migrants from reaching Sweden, which abruptly reversed its open-door policy after receiving more than 160,000 asylum-seekers last year, mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

It follows the reintroduction of border checks in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and other countries in what’s supposed to be a passport-free travel zone spanning 26 nations.

The moves are supposedly temporary, but are likely to be extended if Europe’s migrant crisis continues in 2016.

“It’s basically every country for itself now,” said Mark Rhinard, an expert on the European Union at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.

Citing exceptional national circumstances related to security, terrorism and public order, several European countries have suspended EU rules that required them to keep their borders open to each other.

It’s a significant development that strikes at the very heart of the EU project—the free movement of goods and people across borders.

The Bruegel think tank in Brussels says that in 2014 there were almost 1.7 million cross-border commuters in the passport-free zone known as the Schengen Area, after the Luxembourg town where it was created in 1985. Abolishing it would affect their daily lives, but the consequences for Europe would go deeper, given the “visible and powerful symbol of European integration that Schengen represents,” Bruegel researchers Nuria Boot and Guntram Wolff wrote in December.

Whether the temporary reintroduction of borders also means rebuilding mental boundaries between EU citizens remains to be seen. But the migrant crisis is becoming an even bigger challenge to European unity than the cracks emerging in recent years over the bloc’s common currency, the euro.

EU nations demonstrated starkly different views on how to deal with the 1 million migrants that crossed the Mediterranean in 2015. Germany and Sweden, until recently, said refugees were welcome, while Hungary built a fence to keep them out. The Danish government took a series of measures to discourage migrants from going there, including a proposal to seize their jewelry to cover their expenses in Denmark.

Common rules requiring refugees to seek shelter in the first EU country they enter collapsed, as Greece and Italy were overwhelmed by sea arrivals and countries further north just waved the migrants through to their intended destination, often Germany or the Scandinavian countries.

Meanwhile the EU’s efforts to spread refugees more evenly across the bloc met stiff resistance from member states. By November only about 150 of 160,000 refugees had been relocated from Greece and Italy under an EU plan.

The crisis underlines structural flaws in the EU, showing how it has implemented common rules that it just can’t enforce once the external pressures become too great, said Karl Lallerstedt, co-founder of Black Market Watch, a Switzerland-based non-profit group focusing on cross-border smuggling.

“It’s not a strong federal state that can overrule its members,” he said. “At the same time individual states have obligations to the EU. So you’re in this sort of half-way house.”

Any hope of a quick return to a borderless Europe was crushed by the deadly Paris attacks in November, after which France declared a state of emergency and beefed up border controls with neighboring countries.

However, if bottlenecks build up at the borders, EU citizens and companies moving goods in trucks will eventually get fed up, said Rhinard, of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.

“As soon as it starts to bite economically, people are going to start to ask: ‘Is this the right solution to the problem?'” Rhinard said.

That question is already being asked by companies and commuters opposed to new ID checks at the 8-kilometer (5-mile) Oresund bridge-and-tunnel, known to European TV viewers as the focal point of the Swedish-Danish crime series “The Bridge.”

Train networks on either side have been integrated to allow thousands of commuters to cross the bridge daily, essentially incorporating the southern Swedish cities of Malmo and Lund into suburban Copenhagen.

But the new ID checks mean there will be no more direct railway service from Copenhagen’s main station to Sweden. Travelers heading to Malmo will have to switch trains at Copenhagen Airport after going through the checkpoints there, adding an estimated half an hour to the 40-minute commute.

To avoid the hassle, Sweden’s national railway company SJ cancelled service to Denmark altogether, leaving only Danish and regional Swedish operators with service across the bridge.

“This is what happens when national states put down their foot down and say security is most important,” said Onnerfors. “It collides with the freedom (of movement) they’ve been talking about for 20 years, which was the reason we joined the EU to begin with.”

Oregon Occupation About Unconstitutional Federal Land Grab

Corporate media portrays incident as illegal act by crazed gun-toting militias

Corporate media coverage of the impending standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon will downplay the underlying issue—the federal government’s claimed ownership in the name of the “people” of nearly 650 million acres of land, almost 30 percent of the area of the United States.

fed-lands

The federal government is not authorized to own land. The Constitution restricts the feds to establishing “Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other Needful Buildings” and reserves for the States the right to own land.

“Our Founding Fathers specifically restricted what land the Federal government could own,” explains the Constitutional Concepts Foundation. “Even then, the Federal government had to purchase the land from the State, with the approval of the State Legislature. Further, the Constitution stipulates that all new States will become members of the Union on an equal footing with all other States. This is not true of the Western States where the vast majority of the land within the boundaries of the State was simply taken by the Federal government.”

Supporters of large, centralized government argue the massive theft of land is permitted under the Property Clause of the Constitution. “The Property Clause gives Congress the authority over federal property generally, and the Supreme Court has described Congress’s power to legislate under this clause as ‘without limitation,’” concludes the Congressional Research Service, a legislative branch agency within the Library of Congress.

The mention of the Supreme Court refers to a 1911 ruling permitting the federal government to grab large tracts of land as national forests held in the “public interest.”

“The current regime of federal land management is blatantly unconstitutional,” writes the Tenth Amendment Center. “The founding fathers never intended to create a Republic where the feds could impose draconian fees on peaceful individuals and force them from the land. As a matter of fact, that is exactly the arrangement that the Constitution was written to prevent, as it clearly violates the principles of fiduciary government, sympathy and independence.”

Omitted from the discussion playing out in the media is the fact the feds have gobbled up millions of acres of land in Pacman fashion not out of concern for the “public interest,” but for profit and concession to large corporations in control of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government.

For instance, the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have the largest deposits of shale oil in the world. In addition, the West has an abundance of bauxite, phosphate, trees, oil, gas, clay, fish and is cultivated for a wide variety of agricultural products.

Since 1982, the federal government has leased for oil and gas drilling 229 million acres of public and private land in 12 western states. One of the federal government’s largest sources of non-tax revenue comes from the land it leases to oil, gas and coal companies, The Washington Post notes. Corporations get a stupendous deal from the government, often leasing land at around $2 per acre, a price less than a cup of coffee.

The occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge center is about the federal government’s unconstitutional claimed ownership of land and the rules it imposes on ranchers (and its effort to drive the few remaining independent ranchers off the land).

The corporate media, however, will continue to minimize this and portray the occupation as an illegal act by gun-toting militias bent on armed confrontation with the federal government. This may sell newspapers and result in web page views, but it does a disservice to the overriding issue—the continued expansion of government and its zeal to abrogate property rights and implement Agenda 21.

Watch: Trump Raises Bible In The Air, The 8 Words He Says Next Will Make Cruz Fans FURIOUS

Note: It appears that both of Joe Farah’s websites, World Net Daily, and Western Journalism are not for Trump

BY MELODY DAREING FOR WESTERNJOURNALISM.COM

The bromance brewing between GOP leading presidential contender Donald Trump and emerging threat Ted Cruz is over.

Trump has been increasingly proactive in sparring with Cruz in recent public meetings, questioning his faith and referring to his father’s Cuban immigration. Trump’s latest jab came in a Dec. 29 campaign stomp to reach Iowa conservatives. During that rally, Trump waved a Bible in the air and aimed a political arrow at Cruz, who remains a darling of evangelical Christians.

“Just remember this. You got to remember in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba,” Trump said.

“I am an evangelical. I’m a Christian. I’m a Presbyterian,” he said.

The controversial comments are a switch from interaction between the billionaire and the Texan earlier in the campaign. Trump and Cruz have, up until now, showed admiration for one another. Cruz defended some of Trump’s comments on issues immigration and Trump said he would consider Cruz as a running mate.

“Well, I like him,” Trump said earlier this year when he was asked about Cruz as a potential running mate. “He’s backed everything I’ve said.”

“Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent,” he added.

Those days are apparently over. Trump first referenced the Texas senator’s Cuban-born father in a rally speech earlier in December first stating that “not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba.”

Ted Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, 76, is a Christian speaker and evangelical pastor. The senator’s mother is originally from Delaware and the Texas politician was born in Alberta, Canada, when his parents were working in the oil business.

Trump’s swipe is also a hit on another GOP presidential candidate. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who is Roman Catholic, was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. Neither Cruz nor Rubio have acknowledged Trump’s comments.

A reason for the sudden Trump turn on Cruz is the latest Real Clear Politics polls, according to the pundits. While Trump remains well in the lead in national polls with 35.6 percent support to 18.6 supporting Cruz in second place, the Texas senator has gained the lead in all-important Iowa. Iowa polls show that Cruz is at 30.3 percent to Trump’s 27.5 percent. Rubio is third in Iowa polls at 12 percent.

Trump’s tactics aren’t new. He also questioned fellow Republican contender Dr. Ben Carson’s faith in October when Carson tied with him in polling.

Stupid 2015 predictions made by some stupid people

By Kevin by Coach Collins

As compiled by Politico, let’s take a look at the genius predictions made by the “experts,” during 2015.

Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz, July 7:

“I happen to be in the camp that thinks [Romney’s] actually going to run, and I think he will be the next president of the United States.”

Chris Cillizza the Washington Post, February 26, 2015: “So, let’s assume—gulp—that Trump is serious this time around. Heck, while we’re at it, let’s assume he actually runs. IT. DOESN’T. MATTER. I can’t emphasize that strongly enough.”

As late as August 20, the Daily Beast said: “Making political predictions rarely turns out well, but here’s one: Donald Trump will not be a candidate for president in 2016. What? Yes, I know, he’s already announced. In my view, though, he won’t take this all the way to the ballot in Iowa, New Hampshire, or any of the Republican caucus or primary elections. Why? Because he’s Donald Trump and everything we know about him tells us he won’t do it.”

Senator Lindsey Graham July 20, 2015: “The American people will not tolerate what he is doing now regarding those who have served. This is a line he has crossed. This is the beginning of the end of Donald Trump.”

Charles Krauthammer, Fox News, August 6, 2015: “The real story is the collapse of Trump in this debate. … The fact is he was out of place. … When he can go on on his own and ramble, he is entertaining, sharp and amusing, but here when he is controlled in a tight setting he was lost for most of the debate.”

Jonah Goldberg, Los Angeles Times, July 22, 2015: “The Trump squall is not over, alas. But it’s nonetheless obvious that we will someday soon look back on this as the beginning of the end of Trumpmania. … The reason his demise is all so predictable is that personality eventually shines through. A few politicians are capable of hiding their truly unpleasant personal qualities, but it takes enormous effort, and sooner or later the mask slips.”

Nate Cohn, the New York Times, July 8, 2015: “Donald Trump’s surge in the polls has followed the classic pattern of a media-driven surge. Now it will most likely follow the classic pattern of a party-backed decline. … His support will erode as the tone of coverage shifts from publicizing his anti-establishment and anti-immigration views, which have some resonance in the party, to reflecting the chorus of Republican criticism of his most outrageous comments and the more liberal elements of his record.”

Some guy writing in American Spectator, July 15:

“..It will soon become apparent that Scott Walker stands out head and shoulders above the rest. … I believe Walker will not only win the GOP nomination, but be elected President in November 2016.”

White 20-year old Female College Student Shot in Head on New Year’s Day by 5 or 6 Young Black Men - Where is the Media Outrage?

When a black person is shot, it’s news everywhere, especially if it’s by police, even if the person shot is a criminal, but when a white person is killed by a black or by illegal aliens, the media totally ignores it, as in this case.

Denton Police say a 20-year-old University of North Texas student has died after being taken off life support following a shooting overnight.

Sara Mutschlechner was driving along North Elm Street around 2 a.m. Friday when a black Toyota or Lexus SUV pulled up next to her. Words were exchanged and someone in the SUV opened fire, police said.

Mutschlechner was shot in the head. She lost control of her car and crashed into a nearby electrical pole.

Witnesses told police there were five or six young black men in the SUV, which drove off. They recognized at least two of them from a big New Year’s Eve party on Crisoforo Drive.

Police encourage anyone with information about the party, the shooting or the SUV to call Investigator Eric Beckwith at 940-349-7974 or email [email protected].

Friends said Mutschlechner was acting as their designated driver for New Year’s Eve.
