South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham became the first Republican presidential candidate to call on the United States to admit more Syrian refugees on Tuesday.
In a speech expressing his opposition to the proposed Iran deal, Graham urged the United States to take “its fair share of Syrian refugees”.
The South Carolina Republican said “we should take the Statue of Liberty and tear it down” if the United States continues its current, limited policies on admitting refugees from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Graham also called on European nations to “up their game” in addressing the refugee crisis. In a pointed reference to the second world war, he said to Europeans: “It wasn’t that long ago you needed someone’s help.”
Graham joins Democrat Martin O’Malley as only the second of 22 presidential candidates to call for the United States to admit more refugees from Syria.
Marco Rubio, another Republican presidential contender, told reporters on Tuesday he is “open” to allowing more refugees into the United States – reiterating an answer he first provided in a radio interview on Monday.
“I don’t know what the right number is, but we want to be careful terrorists don’t take advantage … to infiltrate themselves among the very innocent people that would also be coming,” Rubio, a senator from Florida, said after a campaign event in Keene, New Hampshire.
He added that Europe would nonetheless face the brunt of the refugee crisis and said the US should lend support to its allies.
“We should be able to offer them them assistance, in creating some places and camps where people can live and be safe while this thing works itself out,” Rubio said.
The US has accepted only 1,500 Syrian refugees so far, and the White House said last week it did not anticipate any changes to its current policy.
Rubio’s comments followed a town hall in which he advocated for a foreign policy driven by “moral clarity” and denounced the Obama administration for overseeing a period of global chaos that contributed to the refugee crisis in Europe.
The senator first addressed the situation in an interview Sunday with the Boston Herald Radio and expressed particular concern for Syrian Christians who have been displaced by the ongoing civil war.
“They would prefer to stay in that region, so I think a better outcome here obviously is that we have to provide for their short term,” Rubio told the station. “But long term, we have to have a precise regional strategy that allows, especially the Christians to go back to their ancient cities, and their ancient populations centers, where they have been for almost 2,000 years, up until recent times.”
Graham also used passionate language to denounce those in the Republican party who have followed the lead of GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in calling for mass deportation of all 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States. A vocal supporter of comprehensive immigration reform within the GOP, Graham used powerful, personal language Tuesday to express his discontent with the rightward tilt of his party on immigration.
The South Carolina Republican, who was left to raise his younger sister after his parents died, told attendees that “when they write the history of these times, Lindsey Graham, who is from the reddest of red states, can say the following: I refused to break up families for my political benefit because I know what it’s like to have your family destroyed.”
Graham said that it is important for the Republican party’s political future to attract Hispanic voters. Hispanic voters would be attracted to “the party of limited government, stronger military, faith-based values, but I’d have a hard time getting there if I believe you were going to deport my mother”, he said.
The three-term senator is currently receiving less than 1% of the vote in national polls and is struggling even in his home state of South Carolina.

In a short essay on September 8, 2026 in National Review, headlined “The Pentagon Throws the Book At Bowe Bergdahl,” David French writes that “[i]t looks like the Obama administration may have traded five high-ranking Taliban prisoners for someone who was worse than a deserter.” Mr. French is referring to Bergdahl having been charged with not only UCMJ Article 85 desertion, but also Article 99.
The question arises: Why?
I have written before that the Department of the Army, Defense Department, and Commander-in-Chief cannot be trusted to seek, let alone obtain, a just result in the Bergdahl case. Despite the universal reporting that the Article 99 charge is stiff and could send Bergdahl away for a very long time, events of the last few days further cloud what the military is up to.
Rather than rely on what TV’s talking heads and other media pundits say about those two articles, let’s see what they actually say.
Article 85 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, “Desertion with Intent to Shirk Important or Hazardous Duty,” carries a maximum potential punishment of a dishonorable discharge, reduction to the rank of E-1, total forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and maximum confinement of five years.
Article 99 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, “Misbehavior Before The Enemy by Endangering the Safety of a Command, Unit or Place,” carries a maximum potential penalty of dishonorable discharge, reduction to the rank of E-1, total forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and possible confinement for life.
Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the specific legal elements for Article 85, “Desertion with Intent to Shirk Important or Hazardous Duty,” are: (1) “The accused quit his (or her) unit or place of duty,” (2) “The accused did so with the intent to avoid or shirk certain service,” (3) The duty to be performed was hazardous or important,” (4) “The accused knew he (or she) was required for the duty or service,” and (5) “The accused remained absent until a certain date.” (my emphasis.)
The text of Article 99 is as follows:
“Any member of the armed forces who before or in the presence of the enemy—
(1) runs away;
(2) shamefully abandons, surrenders, or delivers up any command, unit, place, or military property which it is his duty to defend;
(3) through disobedience, neglect, or intentional misconduct endangers the safety of any such command, unit, place, or military property;
(4) casts away his arms or ammunition;
(5) is guilty of cowardly conduct;
(6) quits his place of duty to plunder or pillage;
(7) causes false alarms in any command, unit, or place under control of the armed forces;
(8) willfully fails to do his utmost to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy any enemy troops, combatants, vessels, aircraft, or any other thing, which it is his duty so to encounter, engage, capture, or destroy; or
(9) does not afford all practicable relief and assistance to any troops, combatants, vessels, or aircraft of the armed forces belonging to the United States or their allies when engaged in battle; shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.”
Why, in addition to Article 85 desertion, Article 99 “Misbehavior”?
Charging Bergdahl with Article 99 and its much higher penalty gives the prosecution more leverage in obtaining a plea. Then there’s the problem of intent, usually only provable circumstantially. Article 85 expressly requires it. Article 99 does not. Indeed, intent may not be an essential element of Article 99, making conviction easier than on the Article 85 charge.
My guess is that the Army is looking for Berghdahl to cop a plea, which would bury the Bergdahl-for-Taliban affair without the fanfare and embarrassment of a court martial. Given the facts that have emerged, especially the expected testimony of Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers, there’s no way he is going to walk. He and his lawyers know that.
The only question is how severe the sentence will be. The answer will tell us whether all along the Army has been in the tank for Bowe Bergdahl.

According to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, government jobs now outnumber manufacturing jobs by nearly 1.8 to 1. Almost 22,000,000 people work for local, state, and federal agencies, compared to 12,329,000 workers in the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing employment hasn’t been this low since before World War Two, and since 1989 when these two numbers were equal, our government has gained 4 million employees while manufacturing has lost 5.5 million.
In 1941, nearly one of ten Americans worked in the manufacturing sector compared to 1 and 26 today. In that same time period, the ratio of government workers has grown from 1 in 27.7 to 1 in 14.6 today. However, if you took a closer look at the recent growth of government jobs, you might be fooled into thinking that our government is actually diminishing.
While the number of government jobs has grown consistently for decades, it hasn’t kept up with population growth in recent years. Since the 1980’s the percentage of the population that is employed by the government at all levels, had actually fallen slightly to 6.9% by 2012. This decline however, has coincided with a substantial increase in government debt. Within the next ten years, the government’s deficit is set to explode to astronomical levels, as is government revenue. In other words, our government is growing slowly, but on a per capita basis they’re leaching off the private sector now more than ever.
My comments: Sadly, I’m not surprised, the destruction of American education has gone on now since the late 1800’s, but really took a nose dive in 1985, and 1988 when Ronald Reagan gave us the US/Soviet education agreements which eliminated academic teaching. What we now have is the Soviet Polytech form of dog training, and teaching to the test, which is Pavlovian/Skinnerian training. Today’s high school graduates cannot read, write, spell, do math, or articulate a proper sentence. Their ability to logic out a problem is non-existant. This is workforce training…little robots who will do what the government tells them to do.

Dear Reader,
More than a year ago I revealed that certain vaccines are made with — and contain — fetal cells and DNA from aborted babies.
And since that time, pro-vaccine doctors, drug companies and politicians have been working overtime to cover their tracks.
Many of them will still lie right to your face and claim it isn’t true.
But now a New York mother of an autistic child has put the entire vaccine industry on notice. She won a two-year fight to get her state to admit that one of the most common vaccines on the market is made with aborted fetal tissue.
And that no child should ever be forced to get it.
States like California and Rhode Island have spent the past year attacking your religious freedoms with mandatory vaccine laws that end faith-based exemptions.
Pro-vax politicians like California Senator Richard Pan have even lied to state residents and claimed that the notion that vaccines contain fetal DNA is a “myth.”
But in New York, government agencies are actually looking at the evidence — and they’re singing a very different tune.
State Education Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia recently ruled in favor of a Russian immigrant woman’s claim that allowing her autistic child to be given a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine made with and containing fetal cells violated her Orthodox beliefs.
Believe me, this wasn’t an easy process. At first, the mother’s request was rejected, and she spent two years trying to convince the state that her religious beliefs were sincere enough.
But thank goodness some sanity prevailed.
Commissioner Elia ruled that the woman, who has not been named, was entitled to her own faith-based objections. Especially because the state found that the mother submitted clear and convincing evidence that the MMR vaccine was made using DNA from aborted babies.
That admission alone should make it a lot easier for other New York parents to opt out of vaccines like MMR for their kids. But as you can imagine, it sent a lot of vaccine supporters into hissy fits.
When the story hit the press, state Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz put his two cents in, saying “It’s too easy to get an exemption.”
Are you kidding me? It took this poor mom years!
Fox News celebrity doctor Dr. Manny Alvarez also chimed in, calling the victory “a mistake” and claiming that the mother was “poorly informed.”
But apparently, he’s the one who is poorly informed.
He tried to reassure his viewers by claiming that the leftover fetal DNA in these vaccines is safe and is just an “infinitesimal amount.” As if even one cell or gene wouldn’t be too many!
But this spring I told you about a study conducted by Dr. Theresa Deisher that exposed the frightening connection between the MMR shot and childhood cancers.
You see, one of the fetal cells lines (it goes by the code name of WI-38) in the MMR vaccine came from an aborted baby girl in Sweden who was contaminated with a retrovirus.
Dr. Deisher found that virus can be “reactivated” and is commonly associated with lymphomas in children.
She also discovered that every time a vaccine made with ingredients from aborted babies was introduced, there is a giant rise in the rates of autism.
So the MMR shot, the one this mom fought so hard to keep her child from receiving, is strongly connected to cancer and autism.
While this was just one mom, in one state, it’s still a giant victory.
And it’s a good reminder that we all need to keep leaning on our state representatives and health officials to stop these attacks on our religious freedoms and our right to protect our kids.
