Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis
The left-leaning fundraising site GoFundMe has declined to accept a fundraising campaign for jailed Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis.
Davis was jailed on Thursday for defying a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges in June. She was ordered detained for contempt of court and later rejected a proposal to allow her deputies to process same-sex marriage licenses that could have prompted her release. She has become the symbol of religious opposition to the heavy-handed tactics of the “gaystapo” who are ramming same-sex marriage through at the federal level across the nation in opposition of religious conservatives.
U.S. News and World Report noted, “In sending her to jail, U.S. District Judge David Bunning ignored the American Civil Liberties Union’s request that Davis be fined to compel compliance with orders that she issue marriage licenses. ACLU attorney Heather Weaver, who is working on the case, said there was testimony about fundraising efforts on Davis’ behalf, apparently a factor in the judge’s decision not to impose financial penalties.”
Davis will remain incarcerated until she agrees to resume issuing licenses, including those for same-sex marriage.
Supporters attempted to initiate a GoFundMe campaign for her defense, but were thwarted by the site’s Terms and Conditions, which were updated on April 29 to specify the site can choose not to allow “campaigns in defense of formal charges or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful, sexual or discriminatory acts.”
These terms were updated in response to the massive support behind the bakery Sweet Cakes By Melissa, which declined to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple and were slapped with a $135,000 fine. A GoFundMe fundraiser raised over $109,000 within a few hours in support of the family before being abruptly shut down, possibly in response to the complaints of a competing bakery.
GoFundMe has developed a reputation for punitively denying fundraising efforts for causes it deems contrary to its progressive agenda. As one website put it, “GoFundMe bans Christians from trying to help other Christians.”
In a statement regarding their decision to close the Sweet Cakes account, GoFundMe wrote: “After careful review by our team, we have found the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions. The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal. While a different campaign was recently permitted for a pizzeria in Indiana, no laws were violated and the campaign remained live. However, the subjects of the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign have been formally charged by local authorities and found to be in violation of Oregon state law concerning discriminatory acts. Accordingly, the campaign has been disabled.”
However, a fast search through GoFundMe confirms the fundraising site has many requests for financial assistance from those facing legal actions, including criminal convictions. These include criminal trespassing and obstructing official business; possession of psychedelics; and prescription forgery (convicted of a third degree felony).
Most disturbingly, there is a GoFundMe campaign for aggravated sexual assault on a child (resulting in a 99-year prison sentence).
On Saturday, hundreds of people rallied in Grayson in support of Davis.

I believe this is one of those situations where there is enough blame to go around to all those concerned several times over.
It is my understanding that the forms have the county clerk’s name on them and even though someone under her does the paperwork, her name is still on the form. Which is why there are those saying that the licenses given out since she has been incarcerated are illegal because they would have had to forge her signature. Also, there were at least two ‘couples’ who came from other parts of the state to get a marriage license in that particular county just to heckle her. She asked that the forms be redone to alleviate the name issue. The judge that incarcerated her told her they could not do that.
I find this whole thing one big illegal mess. The voters of the county voted her into office and therefore she answers to the county commission, not the judge. County commissions answer to the voters of the county with oversite from a state official — in my state I think it is the Dept of Admin or Budget. Judges answer to the non-elected judicial system and ultimately the Attorney General.
In other words, if our legislatures were doing their jobs non of this would be an issue. Congress writes the laws, Judges do not. State Legislatures write the laws — or at least those the feds will let them which of course is illegal — not the state judges. If the US Congress had put a halt to the Supreme Courts overreach and illegal manevers many years ago this country would be so much better off. I think the gov’t overreach is coming to a head, big time!! May the Lord have mercy.

MA, why is it that I am thinking someone is paying her to do this? I may well be wrong, but she could have resigned, or taken this up with a superior and discussed it prior to this…something smells to me…

Did she take an oath of office and if so did it say anything about her obeying the law. If so she would be in violation. However, she should just have resigned instead of taking this to a higher court and I understand the CLU is defending her which I believe is no charge to her. And I don’t believe the courts fined her any monies so I can’t see why she would need a go fund me account.

I agree with you. For me, this whole thing smells. Why didn’t she just resign if she knew it would come to this? The two women in TN just resigned and left their jobs rather than go through what Davis is going through. They knew the rules. And yes, why does she need a GoFund account? People say she’s a new Christian, but she’s been a Christian now for four years, and she’s still a Democrat. Does that even make sense to you? And the politicians, especially Huckabee, are making hay with this with the press coverage and I’m sure Huck is doing it to get the mileage for his presidential campaign. Trump was right, it’s the law.
Several people have said that the State of Kentucky Constitution says that marriage is between a man and a woman, end of story. Well, okay, that’s fine, then the state legislature needs to nullify the federal law that the supremes decided was okay with the Constitution. Otherwise, this is another Roe vs Wade situation, it turns over all the state laws to follow the federal law, defined and okayed by the Supremes (who we all know are a stacked deck).

To correct a statement from my last posting. It is not the CLU that is defending Kim Davis it is the Liberty Council based in Orlando FL. And they are doing it at no charge to her.
