Baghdad (AFP) - Iraq is building a three-metre-high security wall and trench defences around Baghdad in an effort to thwart jihadist attacks, a security official said on Thursday.

The aim is to prevent the infiltration of “terrorists” and car bombs into the city, Brigadier General Saad Maan said.

“We began constructing a three-metre-high (10 foot) concrete wall and a trench around the city of Baghdad,” he told AFP.

Construction will take place in two phases, with areas north and west of Baghdad being addressed first, followed by other locations, though some will not require a wall or trench due to natural features, Maan said.

Territory held by the Islamic State jihadist group is located north and west of the capital, making those directions the priority.

After the completion of the first phase, which is expected to take six months, Maan said that 50 percent of checkpoints inside Baghdad will be removed.

The city is littered with checkpoints that often wave cars through or at most perform cursory searches, adding little to security while causing major traffic jams.

Baghdad is often hit by bombings and other attacks, but security in the capital has improved since IS launched a sweeping offensive in June 2014, likely because the jihadists have subsequently been occupied elsewhere.

US layoffs surge to 6-month high

US layoffs surge to 6-month high

Layoffs surged in January to the highest levels since July as employers in the retail and energy sectors pulled out the pink slips, according to a private survey out Thursday.

U.S.-based companies announced 75,114 planned job cuts last month, up more than 200 percent from a 15-year low in December, according to global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That figure was also 42 percent higher from a year ago.

Retailers were the biggest job cutter, despite a nearly 8 percent bump in U.S. holiday sales in 2015. The sector slashed 22,246 positions, a seven-year high.

Wal-Mart accounted for much of the payroll reductions. The nation’s largest retailer said it plans to close 269 stores and expects to let go 16,000 workers.

Macy’s said it will also shutter some locations this year, costing 4,820 employees their jobs.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas CEO John A.Challenger said the shift from in-store selling to online transactions is playing a major part in the scaling back of retail work forces.

Macy’s “had a 25 percent jump in their online sales, but their retail sales at bricks and mortars fell by 5 percent, so they are cutting stores,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday.

January delivered a fresh round of energy sector layoffs, as well. Announced payroll reductions of 20,246 marked the highest monthly total since the start of the oil price rout in mid-2014 that has sent crude prices spiraling about 70 percent and led to massive cost-cutting in the U.S. oil patch.

“Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger — all the big oil producers of equipment — are continuing to cut jobs. That suggests that the big … oil and gas companies are cutting production and exploration,” Challenger said.

The report was released a day before the Labor Department releases its jobs data for January. On Wednesday, ADP and Moody’s Analytics reported that that job growth in the private sector slowed in January.

Challenger said the United States has not yet reached the point at which employers can no longer find skilled workers to expand their business, a condition that could contribute to a recession. However, he said that possibility is now visible on the horizon.

You Won’t Believe Your Eyes: Drone Captures Apocalyptic Devastation of Syrian City

So what does four years of war do to a city?

The city of Homs was at the heart of the revolt against Assad in 2011, and was one of the first urban areas to be overrun by the Syrian rebels. It was a stronghold for the FSA for several years, and was under siege by the Syrian Army until very recently. So what does four years of war do to a city?
A Russian state media outlet recently flew a drone over Homs, and captured the eerie devastation. Homs is pretty much a ghost town now. It looks like the aftermath of a nuclear blast. What was once a bustling metropolitan area with a population of 800,000 people, is now an empty shell of its former self.

Trump on Obama’s Mosque Visit: “Maybe He Feels More Comfortable There” (Video)

“Maybe he feels comfortable there.”

Barack Obama visited the controversial Islamic Center of Maryland on Wednesday.

The president attacked Donald Trump’s plan to impose a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US.

Tonight Trump responded to Obama’s mosque visit.

“Maybe he feels comfortable there.”

The Hill reported:

Donald Trump said President Obama maybe “feels comfortable” in a mosque after his visit to one on Wednesday.

“We have a lot of problems in this country,” Trump said on Fox News Wednesday. “We have a lot of places he can go and he chose a mosque.”

“Maybe he feels comfortable there,” Trump added.

Obama Hid “Jesus” at Catholic University – But Allows “Allah” to Be Widely Displayed During Islamic Center Speech

So it should now be obvious to everyone that President Obama does indeed have a double standard when it comes to religions.

But Obama allowed the word “Allah” to be widely displayed during his first speech at a US Islamic Center.

Barack Obama at Islamic Society of Baltimore

If there was one word which could describe President Obama’s Presidency (aside from failure, Progressive hell, and nightmare) it would be anti-Christian.

From declaring that the United States is no longer a Christian nation to denying Syrian Christians entry into the country President Obama’s distaste for the followers of Jesus are as obvious as the nose on your face. But with less than a year left in his Presidency Obama hasn’t given up on dissing Christians at every opportunity.

For example, President Obama gave a speech at a mosque in the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Wednesday. While standing in front of a glass wall where the word “Allah” was written 99 times in Arabic calligraphy, the President took a stab at Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump by stating there was “inexcusable anti-Islamic rhetoric in the political sphere.” The White House staff were even gifted Qurans at the event.

What makes this entire event a slap in the face to Christians is that while giving a speech at Georgetown University in 2012 the White House told the Catholic school to cover up all religious signs and symbols, including the small letters IHS displayed inside the triangular pediment directly behind and above where the President would stand since the 3 letters signify the name of Jesus Christ (pictured top left).

So it should now be obvious to everyone that President Obama does indeed have a double standard when it comes to religions. Because if you’re a Christian organization you better cover up anything referring to Christ, even if it’s just 3 small letters, if you want the President to give a speech. But if you’re of the Muslim faith it’s ok to have a word wall with “Allah” written 99 times in large Arabic symbols directly behind where President is speaking.

Border agent: ‘We might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether’

“We might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether,” agent says

In a shocking reversal of policy, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are being told to release illegal immigrants and no longer order them to appear at deportation hearings, essentially a license to stay in the United States, a key agent testified Thursday.

What’s more, the stand down order includes a requirement that the whereabouts of illegals released are not to be tracked.

“We might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether,” suggested agent Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council.

Testifying on the two-year border surge of immigrant youths, Judd said the policy shift was prompted by Obama administration “embarrassment” that just over half of illegals ordered to appear in court actually do.

Countries Sign The TPP… Whatever Happened To The ‘Debate’ We Were Promised Before Signing?

Representatives from 12 different nations officially signed the Trans Pacific Partnership (TTP) agreement in Auckland, New Zealand…

About an hour ago, representatives from 12 different nations officially signed the Trans Pacific Partnership (TTP) agreement in Auckland, New Zealand. The date, February 4th (New Zealand time) is noteworthy, because it’s 90 days after the official text was released. There was a 90 day clock that was required between releasing the text and before the US could actually sign onto the agreement. The stated purpose of this 90 day clock was in order to allow “debate” about the agreement. Remember, the entire agreement was negotiated in secret, with US officials treating the text of the document as if it were a national security secret (unless you were an industry lobbyist, of course). So as a nod to pretend “transparency” there was a promise that nothing would be signed for 90 days after the text was actually released.

So… uh… what happened to that “debate”? It didn’t happen at all. The TPP was barely mentioned at all by the administration in the last 90 days. Even during the State of the Union, Obama breezed past the TPP with a quick comment, even though it’s supposedly a defining part of his “legacy.” But there’s been no debate. Because there was never any intent for an actual debate. The 90 day clock was just something that was put into the process so that the USTR and the White House couldpretend that there was more “transparency” and that they wouldn’t sign the agreement until after it had been looked at and understood by the public.

Of course, the signing is a totally meaningless bit of theater. The real fight is over ratification. The various countries need to ratify the TPP for the agreement to go into effect. Technically, the TPP will enter into force 60 days after all signers ratify it… or, if that doesn’t happen, within two years if at least six of the 12 participant countries ratify it and those six countries account for 85% of the combined gross domestic product of the 12 countries. Got that? In short, this means that if the US doesn’t ratify it, the TPP is effectively dead. The US needs a majority of both houses of Congress to approve it, similar to a typical bill. And that’s no sure thing right now. Unfortunately, that’s mainly because a group of our elected officials are upset that the TPP doesn’t go far enoughin helping big businesses block competition, but it’s still worth following.

Inevitably, there will be some debate during the ratification process, though there are enough rumors suggesting that no one really wants to do it until after the Presidential election, because people running for President don’t want to reveal that they’re happy to sell out the public’s interest to support a legacy business lobbyist agenda. But, even that debate will likely be fairly limited and almost certainly will avoid the real issues, and real problems, with the TPP.

Either way, today’s symbolic signing should really be an exclamation point on the near total lack of transparency and debate in this process. The 90 day window was a perfect opportunity to have an actual discussion about what’s in the TPP and why there are problems with it, but the administration showed absolutely no interest in doing so. And why should it? It already got the deal it wanted behind closed doors. But, at least it can pretend it used these 90 days to be “transparent.”

Trump Critic: You’re Racist If You’re Against Welfare

Politician calls criticism against welfare “racist”

Jack Dromey, the politician who wanted Donald Trump banned from the UK, now claims you’re “racist” if you’re against welfare.

The British Labour Party politician made the claim when criticizing a spoof leaflet circulating around the UK with the headline: “England: the welfare country,” which blasts the UK’s generous welfare system.

“Birmingham Erdington MP Jack Dromey called on Prime Minister David Cameron to condemn the ‘racist rant,’” RT reported. “Others described the post as reaching an ‘amazing level of vileness.’”

The leaflet, however, does not mention a specific racial or ethnic group at all:

I’m glad that @David_Cameron‘s @Conservatives government is restricting & limiting benefits but still more to do…

So, in other words, if you’re against an overbloated government welfare program, you’re racist, according to Dromey.

“What’s racist about this?” A commenter on RT asked. “It’s the absolute truth, immigrants have been rushing to get to UK since 60’s so they can do nothing and scrounge off the working people who pay the taxes!”

“I don’t see any racist plot here these people come from all over the place for a freebie life.”

It’s also worth pointing out that according to the Geneva conventions and other international laws, refugees must claim asylum in the ‘first safe country’ they come to, which wouldn’t be the UK if they travelled through Western Europe to get there.

The reason the migrants aren’t seeking “asylum” in the first European country they arrive in, like Greece for example, is because they know they can get more welfare in Germany and the UK.

Dromey made headlines a few weeks ago when he said Trump shouldn’t be allowed “within 1,000 miles” of the UK after the GOP frontrunner said Muslims migrants shouldn’t be able to flood into the U.S. without being properly vetted, especially after ISIS bragged it was exploiting the migrant crisis to invade the West.

German Police Arrest Three ‘Islamist terrorists’ during raids at buildings

450 officers in raids across Germany hunting four Algerians linked to ISIS

Massive raids against suspected Islamist militants were carried out by hundreds of officers in Germany today, including two refugee homes.

The raids were carried out to prevent ‘severe acts of violence’, according to police.

Experts say Germany is long overdue a terrorist attack by jihadists because of its support for military operations against the group in Iraq and Syria.

Two of the addresses searched were an asylum seeker’s centre in Hanover and another in Attendorn in the Sauerland region.

DHS To “Protect” Super Bowl With F-15 Warplanes

Security theater will be on display during America’s most popular sporting event

For years America has witnessed an incremental ramp-up of security at the Super Bowl.

This year the media has been hyping the inclusion of F-15 fighter jets in the security layout, of course domestically our airspace is protected by NORAD so the media blitz over these fighter jets is not as much about security as it is about acclimating the public.

Older Dog Dumped at Shelter for Younger One

My comments: This kind of terrible thing for a dog who has had a home for years is unconscionable. This poor little animal will not, most likely be adopted because of her age, and the people that dumped her should be charged a fortune for doing so. This little animal should live out her years in comfort and care, just as our 5 beloved 4 legged creatures did, and should be wept over when they die. There is a special place for people who do this. If I knew I could get this little dog, I’d take care of it until it passed.

by Rev. Austin Miles

little dog

Cookie is a beautiful 15 year old Cocker Spaniel who had been a faithful loving companion. Then her “family” yanked her up, put her in a car and dumped her at the local dog pound, picked up a young lab to replace her and left. Cookie was totally heartbroken as her little face testified.

She whimpered and cried as she watched the family leave with the younger dog. They had thrown her away like a pair of old shoes. They cared nothing about her even though she showered them with love.

That stone-hearted family should NEVER have been allowed to take another dog home following their cruel action toward a little dog that had done no wrong and displayed nothing but love to them. This is why action is underway to create a National Animal Abuse Registry.

On January 1st, Tennessee became the first state in the U.S. to create a statewide animal abuse registry. Legislators in about nine other states are also considering their own registries. This is a healthy start, but will not stop an abuser from traveling to a nearby state to obtain another innocent animal, not to show love to, but often for their own vile purposes. Think Michael Vick.

The best way to keep our animals safe is to make sure that a known abuser cannot buy or adopt an animal in any state. The way a registry would work is that anyone convicted of animal abuse would have their name, address, and photograph put on a computerized list. This list would be available to breeders, shelters, and stores so that they can check it before sending an animal home with someone.

This would be enforced. If a merchant does not check the list before a sale or knowingly gives an animal to someone on the list, they would be held responsible.

A national registry would have tremendous potential to stop people who habitually harm pets. And if it is modeled after Massachusetts’ pending legislation, then it wouldn’t cost taxpayers a penny. The convicted animal abusers on the registry would pay a yearly maintenance fee to cover all costs.

A petition authored by Joanna Mechlinski is being circulated through: [email protected]. All who love animals should take part in this. This writer already has. Info available at the above email address..

Back to Cookie: She was put in a “kill” shelter where loving animals are put down quickly. What’s even worse, she had become ill with cancer and needed help. As hard-hearted as this action was by the family she loved and trusted, there ARE good hearted people. She was rescued, funds were raised for her surgery, and she is now in a loving home that she deserves. CHEERS!

While everyone can express disgust at a ‘family’ who dumps an older dog to replace her with a younger one, this seems to be an age old problem that remains common in our whacked out society. We have seen men throw away a perfectly good faithful wife who was beginning to age to replace her with a young chick-a-dee.

It is easy to become disgusted with the entire human race. There was a time that God became so outraged with the humans whom He had created that he flooded the earth to kill them all with the exception of one righteous family.

The only reason He does not do this again is because he made a covenant with Noah that He would never flood the earth again. It is now time for us to create our own flood of signatures for the petitions above, get them to our representatives and not stop until this national animal abuse registry is up and running throughout the U.S.
