SANTA’S SURPRISING ORIGINS

A Christmas Classic Feature

By Rev. Austin Miles

(Editor’s Note: This story was first published on December 20, 2001. It has been picked up and re-published all over the world every year since, becoming a Holiday Tradition. In 2004, it caught the attention of producers of Hallmark Films and the writer was cast in the movie, Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus, playing The Mall Santa who magically receives the gift of sign language. The film is re-aired annually.) ——————————————————

He is loveable, congenial, giving and jolly. What’s more he knows everything, as any child will readily testify. He is a colorful old man, whose visits are eagerly awaited by millions of children each year and who, for a little while, makes the world a much happier place.

Is Santa Claus a good influence on children, or a bad influence whose image merely commercializes Christmas and who takes the reason out of the season as some charge?

Where did Santa come from? It will surprise many to learn that Santa Claus (as we know him today) came out of the church itself through the charity of a very devout and caring priest. Now bear in mind that this is a true, historically documented account.

Approximately 200 years after the birth of Christ, a meeting of the elders of a little church in Myra, Turkey had just been called to order. They needed to appoint a bishop but no fitting candidate could be found. So great was the need that they decided to pray.
Out at sea, a ship battled a raging storm. The crew valiantly fought to keep it afloat. Trunks were being thrown overboard to lighten the load as frightened passengers held onto whatever they could to keep from being swept overboard while others huddled in their cabins. The ravaging waves tore some wood from the sides of the ship.
“Nicholas…NICHOLAS!” someone yelled frantically. It had been noised about that a man named Nicholas, who was known to be a man of God, was on board. Out of a cabin, in response to the call, came a man with a long white beard. Holding on to the rail of the tossing ship, he began to pray for the storm to cease. As he prayed he lifted his hands heavenward. Miraculously, the storm calmed. The crippled ship drifted into the harbor of Myra.

The elders of the little church in Myra suddenly stopped in the midst of their intense prayer, opened their eyes and looked around at each other, startled at a message from God that had come to each of them in the form of a vision; they were to appoint as their bishop, the first man named Nicholas who would, within the hour, enter the church to pray.

As the leaning ship hobbled into the port and was docked, Nicholas disembarked and made his way into the village to seek a church. He wanted to give thanks to God for His intervention during the storm that could have killed everyone on board.

Finding the church, he eagerly approached it. The heads of the elders turned toward the door as it slowly opened. The stately man with the snow-white beard entered, and, focused on the altar, made his way down to the front and knelt in a prayer of thanksgiving. As he rose to leave the elders approached him. “What is your name?” asked one. “Nicholas.” was the reply.
“God has sent you to us to be our new bishop,” said another. The group joyfully fitted the surprised Nicholas with a long red priestly robe and miter. Nicholas quickly became known as, “The Bishop of Miracles,” because of so many spectacular answers to his prayers.
Unlike most priests, Bishop Nicholas was wealthy through family inheritance. In his mind, wealth came from God and belonged to God. The very reason for his existence was to serve God. And that is how he lived his life.
Nicholas became increasingly concerned about a custom in Turkey. If little girls did not have a dowry so that they could marry, they would be sold into slavery, which included prostitution. Bishop Nicholas had given away most of his own fortune so he went about and managed to collect gold from admirers.
On December 6th, under cover of darkness, he wrapped the gold coins in several little bags and visited each home that had a daughter without a dowry, dropping a bag of gold through the windows of each, which landed on the hearth where the little girl’s clothes would be drying. When the gold was discovered the next morning, the family rejoiced. Their little daughters were saved from slavery.
Nicholas continued what was to become an annual tradition. Nobody knew the identity of the mysterious benefactor who would slip around the village on that date each year. On one such night, as Nicholas put his arm through the window to drop the bag of gold, instead of it landing on the hearth, the bag fell into a stocking that was hanging in front of the fireplace to dry. It was found the next morning, to the delight of the family. Which, by the way, is how the custom of hanging up Christmas stockings came to be.
Shortly before Nicholas’s death, which occurred on December 6th, the date of his annual visit, it was learned that he was the individual who brought so much joy to so many families.
Five hundred years later, in the 9th Century, Nicholas was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, hence the name, Saint Nicholas. And since the celebration of Christmas came after the life of St. Nicholas, he actually preceded Christmas, as we know it today.
As the story of St. Nicholas spread, French nuns in the 12th Century began making annual night-time visits to poor families with children, leaving fruit and nuts, which these families could not afford.
The nuns made their gift-giving rounds on what became known as, “St. Nicholas Eve,” December 5th. The tradition spread throughout the Old World and across the ocean to the New. Many people to this day celebrate Christmas on December 6th.
St. Nicholas became the Patron Saint of many countries including Russia, becoming a major ingredient in the Russian Christmas celebration. England made St. Nicholas, “Father Christmas.” Germany picked up on that title, and in France he became known as “Papa Noel.”

As the various forms of Nicholas began to emerge in the secular world over the years, some unanticipated problems arose: protests which came out of…the church! Martin Luther pounded his pulpit proclaiming that the true Christmas message was being lost by the Saint Nicholas connection.
The Dutch came to the rescue and adopted what they believed to be a more religious view of Nicholas that would satisfy the critics. The Dutch-German Protestant Reform Movement brought with it the idea that the Christ child should be the standard bearer for Christmas. The German word for Christ child, “Christkindl,” evolved to, “Kris Kringle,” yet another version and another irritant for Luther.

In 1822, on the night before Christmas, which the world began to celebrate on December 24th, Clement Moore wrote a poem about the gift-giver for his six children. That poem, “The Night Before Christmas,” was published the following year in the Sentinel of Troy, New York. Up to that time, Nicholas had taken various forms. He was portrayed with a black beard, then a white beard. He was shown dressed in everything including buckskin.
Mr. Moore defined Nicholas once and for all and renamed him, Santa Claus. He had, no doubt, been influenced by the Dutch who named him, “Sinter (Saint) Klass (short for Nicholas) and that had become, “Sinterklass.”
Others who spoke broken English, knowing that gold had been found on the hearth by the fireplace, started a new legend. The gift-giver came down the chimney and would land in the cinders of burning embers, so they called him, “Cinder Klaussen,” which would in Moore’s hands become, Santa Claus.

Clement Moore’s poem made Santa famous. He even named the reindeer. Not only did he name them, he made them fly. He might have taken that idea from the poet, Washington Irving, who wrote a book in 1809 about a Dutch Colonist’s dream in which St. Nick came riding over the tops of trees in a wagon wherein he brings yearly presents to the children.

An artist named Thomas Nast, who was a Harper’s Weekly cartoonist, began to show what Santa looked like. He dressed him in red, which had been the official color of the priestly robes worn by St. Nicholas and went further by making Santa plump and jolly. To show how much of a church connection to Santa there is, Clement Moore’s father was the Episcopal Bishop of New York, and, Clement Moore himself was Professor of Theology at Union Theological Seminary.

In 1897, a little girl named, Virginia Hanlon, had been told that there really was no Santa Claus. She was so disturbed about it that she wrote a letter to the editor of The New York Sun, whose name, by the way, was Francis P. Church…can’t get away from that connection. He responded with a story titled, “Yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus.” And the world breathed a sigh of relief.

It is interesting to note that the clearest image of Santa came not from the church, or from a poet, but by, of all things, a soft drink company advertisement! That drawing, known as ‘the Coca Cola Santa,’ created and drawn by Haddon Sundblom, made him totally definable. And the elves? Well, they were first seen in Ireland as Leprechauns.

St. Nicholas has been replaced by the created, Santa, who does indeed delight millions of children. But maybe through the hustle and bustle we have lost the very core of what Christmas is and should be; a time of love and sharing with people in need (whether we know them or not), rather than an orgy of gift giving, receiving, and thinking of one’s personal wants. I would like to see the original idea of giving and charity, as set forth by the real St. Nick, with nothing expected in return, brought back.

As for the commercialization of Christmas, there still is a bright side. It is the one time in the year where we can hear songs proclaiming the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, with others heralding the birth of The Holy Child, Jesus Christ our Savior coming through the loud speakers of some malls and shopping centers of the secular world (even though that is changing as the secular world is trying to strip all mention of Jesus Christ out of Christmas).

Homes are still decorated with lights to proclaim Him. And people are a little nicer to one another at least once a year. So maybe this commercialized version is better than having no celebration at all.

Mrs. Clinton and Sargeant Rickie

LEGAL AND POLITICAL COMMENTARY

Mrs. Clinton and Sergeant Rickie

Although no one in the United States can be convicted of a crime unless the defendant confesses, a judge so finds in a “bench” trial, or a jury renders a “guilty” verdict, nothing prevents American citizens from drawing their own conclusions about someone’s criminal conduct, particularly a public figure.

Which brings me, inevitably, to Democrat Party presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It is no longer legitimately arguable that for many, if not all, of Clinton’s emails she used a private, unsecured server located in the civilian world.

Nor is there any doubt that some of that email was secret and top secret (whether or not it was so marked with a yellow highlighter).

These are facts, which even her cabal of spinners, stooges, and sycophants cannot evade.

Which brings me to Sergeant Rickie, a pseudonym, and an illustrative case under a major federal statute to which Mrs. Clinton is exposed.

The sergeant was responsible for all “code word” and other classified material being received by the intelligence division at the headquarters of a military branch in Washington, D.C.

Over the course of several months, he places classified materials in his desk, located in an authorized secured area (SCIF).

Due to a conflict with his supervisor, the sergeant requests a transfer, which is approved.

On his last day at work, the sergeant hastily packs his briefcase which contains classified material from his desk and leaves the SCIF. He has no authority to remove the classified material.

Now he has the classified material at home.

Several weeks later, he stumbles on it.

What now?

Justifiably fearing he’s in big trouble, he has three choices. Destroy it immediately, and lie when the military shows up (a federal crime). Or return it, and face whatever music the military wants to play. Or keep it and, figure out what to do with it later.

Stupidly, he stashes it in his garage.

Enter the movers, and the packers.

And then at his new duty station, the unpackers.

You know what’s coming next.

An unpacker finds the classified material from the sergeant’s desk.

Enter the military investigators, who find even more classified material in the sergeant’s new home, some of which is marked “NOFORN,” “Secret,” and even “Top Secret.” Some of this material is marked “compartmented,” another mega-serious classification.

Title 18, Section 793(f) of the United States Criminal Code, the federal espionage statute, provides that:

Whoever, being entrusted with or having lawful possession or control of any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, instrument, appliance, note, or information, relating to the national defense,

(1) through gross negligence permits the same to be removed from its proper place of custody or delivered to anyone in violation of his trust, or to be lost, stolen, abstracted, or destroyed or

(2) having knowledge that the same has been illegally removed from its proper place of custody or delivered to anyone in violation of its trust, or lost, or stolen, abstracted, or destroyed, and fails to make prompt report of such loss, theft, abstraction, or destruction to his superior officer—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.

Sergeant Rickie is tried at a general court-martial by a military judge without a jury, and eventually takes a plea to one count of violating Section 793(f). He is sentenced to three years’ confinement, busted to private, forfeits pay, and receives a dishonorable discharge. (Later, the prison sentence is reduced to ten months.)

There are other cases under Section 793(f), both in the military and civilian jurisdictions, with outcomes considerably harsher for those who with gross negligence mishandle classified information or don’t promptly report its loss.

Whether Hillary Rodham Clinton will be indicted by Obama’s Department of [In]Justice is unknown.

Whether she violated the Espionage Act is not.

Obama Administration Reveals GOP Leaders’ Betrayal on Common Core in Ed Bill

By FOR THEPULSE2016.COM

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan (photo credit: Center for American Progress via Flickr, CC BY-ND 2.0)

Anti-Common Core activists tried for months to warn Congress that the new federal education bill (the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA) was a disaster that would cement, not overturn, the odious progressive-education philosophies of the Obama Administration. Except for 64 House members (click here to see how your member voted) and 12 senators (click here to see how your senators voted) who were brave enough to buck Republican leadership, their warnings were dismissed. Now comes confirmation that the activists were dead on — and that Republican leadership, including Sen. Lamar Alexander, Rep. John Kline, and House Speaker Paul Ryan, carried out a cynical scheme to betray their constituents and give the Administration everything it wanted.

This confirmation comes from someone who should know — Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

In a just-released interview with Politico Pro, Duncan expressed joyful incredulity at how wonderful ESSA turned out to be from the Administration’s point of view (meaning, how bad it is for children, families, and the Constitution). “I’m stunned,” he said, “at how much better it ended up than either [House or Senate] bill going into conference. I had a Democratic congressman say to me that it’s a miracle — he’s literally never seen anything like it.”

What’s so good about ESSA, according to Duncan? “[I]f you look at the substance of what is there . . . embedded in the law are the values that we’ve promoted and proposed forever. The core of our agenda from Day One, that’s all in there – early childhood, high standards [i.e., Common Core], not turning a blind eye when things are bad. For the first time in our nation’s history, that’s the letter of the law.”

So just as the grassroots warned, the “core of the [leftist] agenda” is embodied in the unread 1,061 pages of ESSA. Every member of Congress who claims to be conservative and who voted for this, deciding to trust the establishment rather than the knowledgeable constituents who know this issue intimately, should hang his or her head in shame.

And as for the establishment — assuming Duncan is telling the truth, and as a lame duck on his way out the door, why shouldn’t he? — what they did is beneath contempt. In Duncan’s own words, speaking of Alexander and Kline:

We had many, many conversations behind the scenes . . . . And I said for us to support it, they’d have to shed their far, far right [i.e., constituents who support the Constitution and oppose Common Core] . . . . I honestly didn’t know if they’d have the political courage to do that. But they both said they would and they did. I give them tremendous credit for that.

And here he recounts his interaction with Ryan:

About a month before [final Senate passage of the bill], I ran into Speaker [Paul] Ryan and we just talked briefly. I asked if he was going to back this, whether he’s willing to take on the far right. I just asked him straight up. And he said, “Absolutely. We’re going to back this.” And, he did. That’s when I thought it had a real shot.

Here is where Duncan describes the tactics of the Republican betrayal:

We were intentionally quiet on the bill – they asked us specifically not to praise it – and to let it get through. And so we went into radio silence and then talked about it after the fact. . . . Our goal was to get this bill passed – intentionally silent on the many, many good aspects of the bill . . . [W]e were very strategically quiet on good stuff . . . .

So Alexander, Kline, and Ryan asked the Administration to keep quiet while they slipped its policies into the bill that they would then market to their “far right” as something that overturned those policies. The “far right” wasn’t fooled, but many, many members of Congress were.

And then Duncan took a victory lap:

The final thing is we have every ability to implement, to regulate the law . . . it’s just a Washington typical storyline. . . . And candidly, our lawyers are much smarter than many of the folks who were working on this bill. There are some face-saving things you give up, some talking points you give up, which we always do because we’re focused on substance. And we have every ability to implement. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

Ever the savvy bureaucrat, Duncan realizes that implementation is often more important than statutory language — and he’s been given language that he can run with, all the way to progressive Utopia.

Duncan brags that his people outsmarted the Republicans working on the bill, which is certainly easy to believe. But maybe it was more than stupidity on their part — maybe the card-carrying members of the education establishment such as Lamar Alexander really agree with the leftists and have really bought into their dangerous philosophies.

But either way, these revelations should end the pathetic charade that Congress just restored states’ autonomy in education. Members of Congress can stop sending out mendacious press statements bragging about how they wrenched back power from Obama and Duncan. The only acceptable statements from them should be along the lines of, “I’m sorry, and I choose not to run for re-election.”

And as for Alexander, Kline, and Ryan — they have simply betrayed their constituents, especially the last few who actually believed any integrity remained in the Republican establishment. Remind us again why we need a Republican Party. Has it not gone the way of the Whigs?

Words Matter – Own Them Or They Will Own You

By James Wilson, guest writer FOR COACHISRIGHT.COM

“An evil soul producing holy witness, Is like a villain with a smiling cheek, A goodly apple rotten at the heart. O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!” – Shakespeare, from “The Merchant of Venice”

If grizzly bears ripped through your hometown leaving a wake of death and destruction, wouldn’t the townspeople do everything in their power to stop them? Wouldn’t you warn the neighboring town?

What if the neighboring town said, “Oh, the state negotiated with the bears already and assured us the grizzlies are peaceful. The bears mean no harm and are offended we see them as a threat. By the way, they prefer to be called URSUS, so be sensitive to their feelings.”

Do we take the grizzlies’ word as proof of their true character? If the state accepts this fraud as the truth, we’re in big trouble. We are left to defend ourselves when that is a specific task rightly delegated to the state.

Political correctness (PC) is changing America’s relationships by diminishing our ability to communicate accurately. PC can even get us killed.

Does it never dawn on us to dispute our enemies? If we know they are enemies of liberty, what makes us think they wouldn’t use deceit to promote their evil agenda? Why is it called ‘hate speech’ (a PC term) to acknowledge this fact?

Recognizing our enemies calls for critical thinking; the process of analyzing facts and looking at an issue objectively. One can only squeak by for so long without critical thinking skills.

With 24-hour news and social media we have become accustomed to being told what to think, what to say, and how to say it. Most Americans never even detect they are being indoctrinated. But it works. Have you heard people defend the enemies who have sworn to kill us by parroting the politically correct drivel they consume daily? It’s all in the name of being ‘tolerant’ (PC’s favorite term).

What is behind the propaganda?

In “Meet the 2nd Largest PR Firm in the World: The U.S. Government”, a Dec 14th article in Forbes, federal agencies spent more than $4.35 BILLION of our tax dollars on public relations in the past eight years. The U.S. employed 3,100 public affairs officers from the same PR agency once used by Vladimir Putin to help formulate Russian propaganda.

Even the IRS jumped on the government’s PR bandwagon. Taxpayers foot the bill for telemarketers – $2.499 MILLION in ‘survey’ contracts for just one of the PR contractors used by the Internal Revenue Service.

The results? The IRS ‘survey’ found that they have a 90% approval rating!

Really? Does anyone actually believe that 90% of taxpayers approve of the tactics and agenda of the Internal Revenue Service? Yet some Americans will buy this nonsense. Literally. Why not call it what it really is: taxpayer-funded propaganda.

The Forbes article concluded that a government using a PR firm to conduct surveys has little to do with transparency and everything to do with self-promotion.

Why do they do it? So government can do as it pleases while claiming that 90% of Americans approve of its practices. A gullible public believes the lie that everything is just dandy. Move along. Nothing to see here.

We’ve accepted too many lies for much too long.
The lies created by political correctness become like poison to a nation. Common language once agreed upon in culture is abruptly replaced with words that conjure up new emotions. The alternate words paint a distorted picture.

Political correctness is a fear-based concept. The desired result is self-censorship. Traditional language and ideas mutually accepted for decades suddenly make outcasts of typical citizens. PC is forced on the non-compliant through name-calling and threats. Like racist, Islamaphobe, etc.

Free speech is squelched. Political discourse comes to a halt. Many lack the courage to resist for fear of ridicule or even imprisonment in the case of language now deemed “hate speech” (a subjective PC term). While claiming ‘tolerance,’ advocates of PC are in reality the least tolerant of all.

Now the people start thinking as a group. Much like a herd instead of free, independent, self-governing citizens. Mission accomplished for the thought police.

What is the goal of PC? The very definition of manipulation: to re-direct the thinking of a nation to suit the purpose of a desired outcome.

Propaganda and manipulation go hand in hand. It is mental and emotional abuse. It is a direct affront to individual liberty: free speech, freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, freedom of expression and so on.

Make no mistake about it. When your own government uses your tax dollars to deceive you and promote the agenda of a sworn enemy, it is treason at its core.

When we are no longer permitted to recognize our mortal enemies for what they really are, we become sitting ducks. PC not only frustrates our ability to think and communicate, it threatens our very existence.

What is the antidote to PC poisoning? To overcome the deceit, it takes courage and critical thinking skills developed by considering facts rather than false arguments based on emotion.

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed.” Thomas Jefferson.
