I have never understood how or why the liberal, Democrat could support Byrd the way they did. Maybe they felt that Byrd had changed and repented of his sin of being a grand poopaw in the KKK. I doubt it. Most people I know of that generation would not do that, they might not let any one know they still held those so-called raciest viewpoints, but they are still there.
