This is from back in the late 90’s but is still pertinent for today. You may want to print this out and read it. It is a transcript of an hour long interview with Professor Rokke regarding the illness of military folks who served and were exposed to depleted uranium.

Roger: Welcome to hour two, ladies and gentlemen, of the Roger Fredinburg Show. Glad to have you with us. It’s been a long time ago when I was one of the very first people to interview a woman who was reaching out to America trying to talk about Gulf War Syndrome. A woman by the name of Joyce Riley who went on to be a repeat guest on other radio programs across the country although I don’t think we ever had her back on. We didn’t spend a lot of time talking about Gulf War sickness or the syndrome that our vets brought home from the Gulf War. There are people out there that think something really bad happened,! What was it? Our guest this evening may have some answers for us. Dr. Doug Rokke joins us to talk about depleted uranium and other things used in Desert Storm. Doug, welcome to the show, nice to have you aboard.
Doug: Evening, sir.
Roger: Can you give us a little background on where you come from and what you’re all about?
Doug: I’m Dr. Doug Rokke. I’m currently an associate professor in Environmental Science at Jacksonville State University. During the Gulf War I was a health physicist responsible for cleaning up all the radiological contamination that was distributed through combat action in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In 1994 and 1995 I also had the responsibility, as mandated by congressional action and the Secretary of Defense, to develop depleted uranium or radioactive materials education training materials and operational guidelines for cleaning up uranium contamination such as now exists in Serbian Kosovo.
Roger: What are you talking about when you say “uranium contamination”?
Doug: During the Gulf War, and we also have evidence it was used before, the United States used what’s called depleted uranium munitions. These munitions are made of uranium 238 which is a radioactive heavy metal. That is the primary component in all uranium ore. These munitions were fired and used extremely effectively against the Iraqi enemy. Unfortuately, the majority of casualties of the Gulf War on the United States side were from friendly fire, which means our own soldiers shot up our own soldiers using uranium munitions.
Roger: I don’t recall us taking a lot of casualties. I’m missing something here.
Doug: That’s true! We didn’t take a lot of casualties. We had a little over 200 casualties. About 120 of those were due to friendly fire, all wounded with uranium munitions.
Roger: How did they use the uranium? How does that become part of the munitions?
Doug: It’s pretty simple. The weapons that we used during the Gulf War were the A10 attack aircraft which has recently been used in Serbian Kosovo every effectively. The A10 attack aircraft fires a 30 mm depleted uranium kinetic energy penetrator. The “penetrator”, as it’s known, is made of uranium 238, solid uranium 238. Each individual round weighs approximately .6 pounds. So, the A10 attack aircraft, according to the Pentagon’s own records, was firing uranium munitions into Serbian Kosovo at a rate of 400 pounds a minute!
Roger: Phew!
Doug: During the Gulf War we left over 300 tons scattered around Iraq, in Kuwait and in Saudi Arabia!
Roger: When you say depleted uranium, you’re talking about uranium that’s been used up in, say, a nuclear power plant?
Doug: No, no.
Roger: Then what is depleted uranium?
Doug: Depleted uranium is a misnomer the Department of Defense put out to make it sound good, okay? If you have solid uranium metal in your hand, again we could get into real science but I’m going to keep it very simple. If you have a rod of solid uranium in your hand, each rod is going to contain, for every 100 pounds of uranium you have, you will have 99.2 pounds of uranium 238 and .8 pounds of uranium 234 and uranium 235. Uranium 234 and 235 is what’s called fissionable uranium. That’s put to use to make nuclear reactor fuel and to make nuclear bombs. So, what you basically have is for every 100 pounds, you’ve got 99 pounds of waste.
Roger: So it’s the leftover from the process to get to the good stuff.
Doug: Exactly!
Roger: How much radioactivity is emitted by one of these 30 mm slugs?
Doug: The uranium 238 slug, and each slug is solid uranium, okay? The different munitions we used during the Gulf War were:
30 mm = 0.6 pounds of uranium per bullet
105 mm = 8.0 pounds of uranium per bullet
120 mm = 10.0 pounds of uranium per bullet
These rounds are fired from the A10 attack aircraft or from the Abrams tank…
Roger: Whatever happened to lead bullets or copper jacketed bullets?
Doug: The uranium bullet is like a silver bullet. It’s like going from a bow and arrow to a nuclear bomb.
Roger: Why?
Doug: It’s extremely effective. When we fired the rounds at the enemy, or at ourselves, this uranium bullet flies downrange at extremely high velocity with tremendous energy and it destroys anything in it’s path.
What happens if you have a tank or a lot of armor, this uranium bullet hits that armored tank and just penetrates right in. As it penetrates in, parts of it come off. We call that spalling (sp?) That would be like taking the whittlings on a piece of wood, the whittles are the shavings that come off. The shavings are now moving at extremely high velocity and they catch fire immediately! They ignite because they’re what’s called “pyroffoic (sp?). They immediately catch fire. What it looks like inside a tank is…you’ve got a solid rod of uranium flying through the tank, then you’ve got shavings coming off of it. What it looks like inside is as if you took a handful of BBs, all on fire, moving at extremely high velocity and just through them across the room. It’s wonderful! It destroys everything in it’s path and there’s no armor that can withstand it.
Roger: So the uranium has some other quality beyond the radioactivity.
Doug: Absolutely! The two properties it has that make it such an effective weapon are the fact that it catches fire automatically and that it’s radioactive. And it’s extremely heavy.
Roger: If you were to take a geigercounter and walk up to one of these uranium bullets, what would it do?
Doug: A standard geigercounter’s not going do you any good at all because although you can pick up some beta emissions, again, there’s different types of radioactive ions and emissions; alpha, beta and gamma. The uranium bullet itself, as long as it’s intact and not inside the body, does not pose any external radiation risk. However, it emits what’s called alpha radiation. That’s like the helium nucleus. It’s extremely heavy. Once this gets into the body it causes tremendous ionization damage. It’s like taking a bowling ball and throwing it down the lane at pins. If I throw a gamma bowling ball i.e. a gamma ray, it might knock over one or two pins. If I throw a bowling ball that’s a beta ray, it might knock over two or three of four pins. If I throw a bowling ball that’s an alpha particle, it’s going to knock over all the pins. So, once it’s in the body it creates tremendous ionization damage in the immediate locale, right around the surrounding tissue i.e. in the lungs, in the intestines, or anyplace.
Roger: Wow! You wouldn’t think the human rights advocates out there would want us using that stuff!
Doug: Well, the United Nations, two or three years ago, came up with a resolution banning it. But, so much for that!
Roger: Once it’s been fired, is it more dangerous?
Doug: Absolutely! The round that’s intact before it’s been fired is basically just big and heavy. About the only problem that’s going to happen is if you drop it on your foot. Once it’s fired, once it impacts a tank, what we found…….I’ve climbed into every U.S. destoyed vehicle that’s ever been hit by a depleted uranium (sic)…plus, I’ve run the additional tests for the U.S. government before I found out they were lying and started to speak out trying to solve this problem.
When the round hits the tank it looses anywhere from 30% to 70% of it’s weight or mass. For example, if I have a 120 mm round that weighs 10 pounds of uranium 238, for each round that hits the target you’re going to lose anywhere from 3 to 7 pounds in and around that target. So what you have on the tanks or buildings or structures or cars or trucks, whatever got hit… on the low end you’ve got 3 pounds of uranium deposited there for every individual round that hits. During the Gulf War we shot most of the tanks with four or five rounds. So that’s 40 pounds of uranium in an area no bigger than your living room!
Roger: I’m trying to understand why it’s safe to handle before it’s fired, but after it’s fired, why are the properties, the molecular properties, change to make it dangerous?
Doug: The molecular properties don’t make a difference. What happens when it’s fired is it hits and forms what we call uranium oxide. Dust! Big dust! A lot of dust! Also, shrapnel, parts of the uranium rod come off. What happens is that anybody in the vehicle gets hit with a radioactive, heavy metal shrapnel that requires immediate medical care, according to the U.S. government’s own policies that were sent out in February, within 24 hours.
Roger: If you don’t seek medical attention, what?
Doug: What will happen is what’s happened now. Cancers, death, kidney problems, respiratory problems, rashes, eye vision problems, gum tissue problems from heavy metals. The uranium, once it gets in there, can get into the body in three different ways. You can inhale it, breathe it in, which is what happened to the majority of the individuals during the Gulf War, to my team and myself, and everybody else. You can get uranium shrapnel into your body which is what happened to the friendly fire casualties from the Gulf War. Or, you can ingest it which means the uranium contamination comes off of the vehicle or the terrain where it is and gets into the food and water supply.
Roger: What does it do inside the body?
Doug: Once the uranium is inside the body, looking at electron mycroscopy spectrographs we looked at earlier today that came down from Oakridge National Labs in Tennessee, scientists up there provided those… This particle is extremely irregular in shape, very sharp and very small. It gets down into the lung and what happens if it’s breathed (interrupted by commercial message)…. When you put sugar into water. It sits there and irradiates the lung and causes damage to the lung. What you have is scar tissue called granulomas and cancer develops. Several of our guys have died from cancer of the lung. We have other individuals who have cancer in their lungs. They’re very sick and can’t get medical care.
Roger: But, outside of the military, if you were to use statistics to determine the number of people per capita that gets each of these diseases that we’re talking about with the Gulf War veterans, what do you discover there? Is there anything out of whack? Because the military says these are normal things that happens and people are just looking at them because they’re veterans from the Gulf War.
Doug: Sure, that’s one argument. I’ll give you an example, and this is what’s really frustrating. During the Gulf War we had approximately 120 friendly fire casualties. These are individuals who were struck with uranium munitions during combat. To this date, the United States Department of Defense or the Veterans Administration has only provided medical care for less than 40 of the friendly fire casualties, eight years after the fact!
Roger: Wow! Why?
Doug: They don’t want to! Not only does it go for the friendly fire casualties; it goes for the recovery team and another 200 individuals that worked for me or with me! The majority of those have not received any medical care whatsoever! The reason is because once you inhale or ingest uranium or leave it in a wound, it’s insidious and you don’t know when it’s going to trigger a problem. The uranium that’s soluble gets into the body and deposits in the bone, the tissue, the gums or anyplace else, then slowly leaches out causing cancers, causing kidney problems, causes rashes, diahrrea and what we’re seeing on a lot of people, respiratory problems.
Roger: Can you detect it in the body?
Doug: If you do what is called a radiobioassay rapidly, and the U.S. Army’s own guidelines say you start that at 24 hours after exposure, not eight years! REPEAT: NOT EIGHT YEARS! 24 HOURS AFTER EXPOSURE!
Roger: Right.
Doug: Then you can determine up to, going through health physics and nuclear medicine books, at about 30 days out, what can be detected that is emitted into the urine, released in the urine when somebody urinates, is about 1/1000th of what’s actually in the body! Now, 8 years out, who knows what you’re going to have. We have a researcher up in Canada, Dr. Hari Sharma, who collected samples from the Kuwaitis and the Iraqis, soldiers and civilian population that were not involved in combat situations. The civilians and the soldiers had high levels of uranium in their bodies that came from shrapnel and eating and drinking….
Roger: The impact of what you’re saying is that this activity that we have undergone in Kosovo, in Serbia, will now forever effect the people there? That they’re going to suffer the consequences of us using uranium-laced ammunition or uranium bullets, that we’re going to have longterm health effects over and above the adverse effects of the conflict?
Doug: We had those in Iraq and amongst our own warriors today. I’ve got a father and son that were both over there working for me. Neither one of them have been able to obtain medical care from the United States government. They’re both warriors.
Roger: I thought we had all these veterans hospitals. As a matter of fact, today there’s an article in the news that says the U.S. Veterans Hospital group is wasting $1,000,000 a day keeping hospitals open for veterans who need help!
Doug: Yesterday I was fighting like mad all over trying to get a very sick individual into medical care. Totally unsuccessfully! They wouldn’t even look at him, and he works at headquarters, Dept. of the Army!
Roger: But that’s not the story we’re getting!
Doug: Absolutely not! Because if they actually have to do the medical correlation which we recommend, myself and the Theater Occupational Health physician recommended in the Spring of 1991, in that same medical recommendations was an ordered, I repeat, ordered by the Deputy Secretary of Defense, he ordered the Secretary of the Army who is now the current head of the VA to provide medical care in 1993! They never did it. They just never did it!
Roger: This is a AP article by Larry Margasic out of Washington, I want to share. It says,
“Stuck with old decrepit hospitals and serving a declining population, the Department of Veterans Affairs is wasting up to $1,000,000 a day on unneeded medical facilities Congressional investigators report. The GAO report is highly critical of the VA’s proposal to fix the system, contending vested interest that might baulk at closing facilities were being given too much control.”
In other words, what they’re saying is they don’t have enough people to fill up all these Veterans hospitals and you’re telling me there are veterans out there that can’t get help! I don’t get it! It doesn’t make any sense!
Doug: They not only can’t get help; but, when you go to the VA hospital, and I’m a VA patient myself, when you go in they don’t even have enough staff to handle the patients they have right now. So, this thing comes down to liability. The orders for medical care for uranium contamination, uranium-exposed warriors, U.S. soldiers and civilians that have never received medical care, would just overwhelm the system.
The next part is if we have to admit, which we should do, that we caused harm to our own civilians and military personnel that went over and answered our nation’s call. We have to recognize what all the evidence points up from all over the place, that the health effects we’re seeing today in the Iraqi population, women and children and men, were caused in part by uranium contamination in addition to all the other hazardous materials and chemical munitions that were spread all over the place due to collateral damage.
The part that happened that’s now got everybody in an uproar, and we were warning the Dept. of Defense not to use any uranium munitions at all in Serbian Kosovo. Those of us who had become the Army’s experts that had the responsibility for cleaning up in the Gulf War and develop all this stuff said, “No, this is wrong”. They (Dept. of Defense, ed.) went on their merry way.
What has happened is the United Nations sent out an environmental report and an environmental team a few weeks ago, they’ve gone back in again in the last couple of days. The intial report that came out, I’m reading this verbatim about Serbian Kosovo.
“Based on given information, the following main types of environmental damaged occurred or may occur:
High levels of pollution around main military targets, particularly the chemical industry;
* Eco-systems threatened, in particular, river eco-systems; (that’s where water comes from, ed)
* Food contamination resulting from soil pollution;
* Drinking water contamination ;
* Human health long term effects from toxic carcinogenic substances and radiation.”
That’s from the first report from the United Nations that came out as far as the effects in Serbia of this airwar that we launched that just destroyed the infrastructure. To make it real simple, when you fire the uranium munitions either in Serbian Kosovo, which we just did, or in what we did in February down in Puerto Rico, we shot up an island in Puerto Rico that violated all international laws and nobody’s cleaned it up yet. Several years ago we shot up Okinawa without anything. Then obviously, Kuwait , Saudi Arabia and Iraq are just a total mess to this day. Without an accountability whatsoever!
Now what’s happened in all of these place, when you have the uranium bullet that’s fired out, you not only have the contaminated equipment and the contaminated terrain around each item of equipment or bunker or building that’s hit, you’re going to have contamination out to 25 meters, around 80 feet.
Roger: Let me take the break here. Dr. Doug Rokke is our guest. He was on the clean up team for this depleted uranium stuff and it’s a mess! We’ll be right back and continue our conversation. If you have questions or comments, feel free to let us know at 1-800-449-8255.
(commercial break and news)
Roger: Depleted uranium, is that the cause of sickness? Doug, are you saying that what we refer to as Gulf War Syndrome is caused by this depleted uranium?
Doug: For those individuals who were involved in friendly fire or those individuals who inhaled or ingested uranium contamination from the Gulf War, or now from Puerto Rico or Okinawa or Serbia, absolutely!
Roger: Here’s why I never pursued this topic with any great fervor. It’s important because I love veterans. I have awards for helping Viet Nam vets on my wall. It just didn’t make sense because I kept hearing these stories about they’re passing this on to their family members; their wives are sick and their kids are sick and the babies are deformed and miscarriages are up. Will a little bit of radiation exposure do that?
Doug: Eight years after the fact, the U.S. Veterans Affairs Office in Baltimore, Maryland, which is the primary program for the uranium contamination medical care follow-up…again, they’ve just got a handful of people there. They verified that uranium was being emitted, not only in the urine but being transferred by the semen! EIGHT YEARS AFTER THE FACT!
Roger: Which would effect mother and child.
Doug: Mother and child or your significant other or anything, eight years after the fact. What were the levels immediately after exposure eight years ago? They had to be astronomical!
Roger: You said you were there on clean up. Describe that process for me. How do you clean this stuff up?
Doug: When we got this mission, and I was assigned this mission upon completion of the ground war. A message came down from headquarters, Dept. of the Army that said find Dr. Rokke and assign him to this mission. Thank you very much! Now it’s been eight years! My guys are sick or dead! I’m sick! It’s just a mess! Civilians are sick; men, women and children all over the world!
A memorandum came to me in Saudi Arabia sent by the Defense Nuclear Agency. I’m going to read this because it’s astonishing:
“ As explosive ordinance, ground combat units and the civil population of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq come increasingly into contact with depleted uranium ordinance, we must be prepared to deal with potential problems; toxic war souvenirs, political fear and post-conflict clean up….. are only some of the issues that must be addresses. Alpha particles, uranium oxide doses which can be inhaled or ingested from expended rounds is a health concern; but, Beta particles from fragments and intact rounds is a serious health threat with a possible exposure rate of 200 millirads per hour on contact.”
This came from the Defense Nuclear Agency identifying the problem sent to myself and my team in March, 1991. It’s important to understand. 200 millirads per hour on contact, that’s what the Defense Superagency told us in a memo. General Schwartzkopf ‘s command was taken over by General Begonis (sp?) Their safety director, the same guy, said it’s not only 200 millirads per hour but he went out and measured and verified 280 millirads per hour on contact. That’s 280 millirads per hour on contact! For the average civilian the total dose they’re permitted to get in a year is 100 millirads. So, in 20 minutes of contact, the average person has exceed their entire annual dose!
Roger: What would you get from an X-ray?
Doug: It’s totally different. It’s different because the X-ray is Gamma radiation which is very penetrating but doesn’t cause much ionization damage. Now the Alpha, once it’s into the body, is tremendously damaging ionization. Remember my example of throwing the bowling ball and knocking all the pins over. The problem from this is the fact that so many either inhaled it or had uranium in their body from the wounds or from food and water contamination. The Army’s own documents they just sent out in the last few months, very specifically state and I’m reading verbatim because it’s just unbelievable! “ Uranium contamination will make food and water unsafe for consumption.” It’s in the Army’s own documents!
Roger: Alright! But, how do you detect it? How do you clean it up? How do you deal with the aftermath?
Doug: The detection is very difficult. Because it’s an Alpha emitter and Beta emitter, you have to have a special radiac meter that will detect Alpha emissions and lowlevel Beta. Myself and the other team members designed, constructed and tested specialized radiac equipment for the U.S. Department of Defense back in 1994 and 1995. To my knowledge, there’s only 50 sets of that equipment and I’m not sure all of those are still work.
Wherever the radioactive contamination exists right now, and remember the A10 were fired in Serbia at the rate 400 pounds per minute…. Think about this! Take hundreds of pencils in your hand (all of these pencils are uranium 238) and throw them all over your back yard. Now you’ve got uranium contamination from the impact so you’ve got the dust and the shrapnel laying all over the destroyed equipment and vehicles in the back yard.
What we found up in Saudi Arabia and what we tested in the Nevada test site, northwest of Las Vegas in 1994 and 1995, is you have to physically remove all the contamination. You have to identify all the equipment and buildings that were hit, and remove them. Package and remove them to a safe site. Then for 25 meters, around 80 or 90 feet around each one of those, you have to take a shovel and pick up all the dirt. If you don’t remove it, it will remain there for eternity, 4 and a half billion years!
The government’s own documents say you don’t enter a destroyed piece of equipment or a vehicle, I wrote this and they’re still concurring, without respiratory protection. In other words, you have to wear a respirator, a gas mask, to prevent breathing it in.
Roger: How many precautions did you and your team take? How many were on your team? How many people from your team have shown signs of sickness?
Doug: As of a few days ago, out of probably about 15 of us on the primary team, there’s only one who’s not sick. Right now the count is about 3 or 4 that are dead.
Roger: Just off your clean up team?
Doug: Yeah!
Roger: What was the cause of death?
Doug: Cancer, lung cancer.
Roger: What is your sickness?
Doug: Lung problems, kidney problems, the same thing as the other team members. My best friend has got the problem, him and his dad, and they still couldn’t get medical care as of a couple of days ago.
Roger: What would be the medical treatment?
Doug: What they need to do is………first off, they should have identified as directed and ordered and required by law, eight years ago they should have done a radiobioassay to determine whether or not there was exposure. Then once identified exposure, provide the medical care. Today, even with individuals with absolutely verified and known high levels of exposure because they’ve waited eight years…..and this is beautiful……..if I wait long enough there won’t be an evidence left in the labwork to find it. So, the doctor does bloodwork or urine work or whatever, there won’t be any evidence left to find. All you’ve got is a sick person.
Roger: Doug, it seems to me, based on the total lack of interest by most of the public, from my perspective as a talk show host, I’ve got to tell you I don’t get many people calling up saying, “Gee, we really screwed our vets here.” It’s not that the stories aren’t out there, the Gulf War Syndrome, the sickness, the depleted uranium, possible chemical or bioweapons exposure, all the things that we’ve talked about with regard to Desert Storm, Iraq, etc. Even with what we’ve just done in Kosovo,
I just don’t seen any real public outrage about it. I wonder, do people not respect the military folks like they did? The Clintons turned them into maitre ‘ds, waiters, bartenders and God knows what else, took them out of uniform and handed them silver trays at the White House. Is that the way people see our military today?
Doug: I think there’s part of that; but, I think what’s more important, people don’t understand what the level of contamination is. When you listen to the Secretary of Defense or any of the individuals, and there was a meeting up in Washington in just the last few days, they keep saying nobody was exposed, there were no exposures, there’s nobody sick! Then they said, “We don’t have any evidence of exposures.” Well, it’s great because then they don’t provide any medical care! I’ve got a letter from the Secretary of Defense dated March 1, 2026 and I’m going to read it again very specifically:
“Additionally, you’ve asked us to provide medical care for civilians who are sick from unusual depleted uranium exposure. The law prohibits both the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration from providing medical care to civilians who do not qualify for care in these government medical facilities.”
When you go to the laws of the federal regulation, it’s very clear that all these people had to do is ask for medical care.
(Commercial and news break)
Roger: Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen! Dr. Doug Rokke is with us. He’s one of the men sent in to do the clean up of all that depleted uranium mess we made in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and now, Kosovo. He and his team are sick. According to Dr. Rokke, they’ve been exposed to some terrible things and can’t get proper medical treatment for their ailments. Dr. Rokke, welcome back.
We’ve got some callers on the line. David in Grants Pass, Oregon on satellite, hello
David: I must concur. I was involved for about 20 years in the veterans project of hiring them in my business. Since I’ve done that, the horror stories I’ve heard from one veteran to the next, not only in my business but outside of my business. One was a fellow who was in the Airborne Rangers died of cancer in his arms that went systemic in his bones. It was from depleted uranium.
Another fellow was a SEAL team commander. He was involved in that project in Carter’s era, in the desert when those helicopters blew up. He got a piece of depleted uranium in his nose and it affected his nasal cavity and eventually ate away his face and killed him.
As I talked to these guys, the biggest problem they had was getting people to listen. The paperwork involved, when you’re a lonely nobody outside of the military trying to deal with the government, they just get nowhere!
Roger: Here’s what I don’t understand. Doug, you’ve got the papers that suggest the military knows these problems exist. Obviously, you can prove you were there. How can the media sit there idly and say, “Well, gee, this never happened !” and go along with the government when you’ve got the documents that show the government knew it was going to happen?
Doug: The government’s own documents, going back originally when we raised the cautions up there, the Secretary of Defense said before Congress that the Iraqis raised the warnings, the cautions. It wasn’t! It was the military’s own experts that cleaned up the mess.
This thing is about liability. Dave’s absolutely right! If we have to admit that we willfully made our own warriors sick because we used radioactive heavy metal poison, exposed them, that means we not only made our warriors sick, we made all the non-combatants and civilian enemy sick permanently, without providing medical care!
We had a conference at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta the end of February- beginning of March. Iraqi doctors came over asking for help. They wanted medical recommendations and the U.S. Department of Defense just stonewalled them! Refuse to provide help!
Roger: But you have the documents right there in your hand!
Doug: Absolutely! We’d known about this forever.
Roger: So are you saying the media is “owned” by the government?
Doug: The media has not covered it because there’s a lot more important stories.
Roger: Well, I just went through a whole week of JFK, Jr.
Doug: Wow! Isn’t that something? I mean, he was not even a soldier or warrior and he’s buried off a destroyer?
Roger: But, I’m saying, “Don’t people love their veterans?” Am I missing something in America? I thought people loved the veterans.
David: I think after Viet Nam…. I had a friend die of cancer after Viet Nam. After that war, for some reason, the attitude from government towards their own veterans did a complete flip-flop because they got away with it in Viet Nam. They just got away with some type of attitude about our veterans. It’s like they’re worthless! It’s unbelievable! It just boggles my mind how our elected officials and the people of the United States just let this go. It’s so, so sad! They’re getting so royally screwed I can’t believe it!
Doug: Depleted uranium is the Agent Orange of the Gulf War. When I was very young I spend two years in Viet Nam before I could shave, so I’ve been in a long time. When we came back, you know, Agent Orange, everybody applied for it. The same thing is happening today.
Roger: I have to take a news break. Dr. Doug Rokke will continue this discussion on the other side. Depeleted uranium, people getting sick, what is the cost? Who’s going to pay? Get you wallet, America! It’s going to be expensive when it all comes down on us!
(NEWS BREAK includes the following items:)
…Senior pentagon officials said that there is no risk of accidental launch or of losing the ability to fire U.S. weapons if necessary. Cooperation with Russia on Y2K issues has suffered as a result of Moscow’s anger about the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia; but, efforts are underway to restore dialogue. The pentagon said there is no reason to believe Nuclear Powers; Britain, Russia and China are failing to fix their computer system to deal with the Y2K problem.
John Decker, USA Radio News, Washington
…Canadian Defense Department launching an investigation into the removal of documents from files of soldiers who developed medical problems after serving in Croatia. (end of tape, ed.)
Roger: Before we get back to our guest, talking about depleted uranium and how it’s having an effect on our military and our soldiers in Iraq and beyond, a powerful story, important stuff! We need to take action here, people! You know what I’m saying?….
… Doug, let me throw something at you. You’ve got a country that goes off to war; the Gulf War, this Slobodon Miloscevic over there in Yugoslavia, whatever the case. How do you ever put an end to the war when you’re really going to be killing their citizens for some 4,000,000,000 years into the future with this garbage?
Doug: You don’t! It was real interesting because, this is unbelievable, on your new they just talked about soldiers in Canada who had medical records altered or disappeared because they were sick from serving over there in that same area where they used uranium munitions. It just came around the loop from the United States to Canada within the last five minutes!
Roger: Isn’t that amazing! Truthfully, I know there’s a problem and I’ve heard of it. I’ve got to tell you Doug, I wish I could be the catalyst for the clarion call to bring attention to this. However, if I were to get on the radio for the next four weeks and harp about this issue, I’d lose all my affiliates! I’m telling you, it’s not going to get ratings! People are not that excited—THEY DON’T GIVE SQUAT!!!
First of all, most Americans don’t view these as real wars, you know, they’re just Bush and Clinton’s assaults on these little nothing countries. They don’t realize the impact these things are going to have into the future; financially, morally and otherwise.
Doug: Let’s bring it home, okay? What we know is after the Gulf War the United States, and I was one that did it, I buried destroyed Bradley fighting vehicles in Saudi Arabia because they were so contaminated and full of unexploded ordinance and body parts I couldn’t bring them back. We brought back 24 vehicles to the United States, that’s Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles. It took the United States, at a specialized facility, over three years to clean it up!
Myself and two other individuals wrote the cleanup plan for the war area in Saudi Arabia after the war.
We gave that to the U.S. Dept. of State who passed it on to the Kuwaitis. They hired (inaudible) to clean up the mess.
So, what they did, and remember, we have radioactive contaminated equipment laying all over the place; we could either bury it or leave it in place or recycle the metal!
We have absolutely verified, 100% verified that radioactive metal was sold on the open market, which came back in your pots and pans and your car parts! Several years ago the United States Navy bought some pots to fix food in. They were radioactive! It was recycled radioactive metal that came out of the Gulf War or Eastern European countries.
What’s happened has come full circle. We not only have contamination of the environment; the water and soil that’s going to harm everybody forever…
Roger: I can see the television ad now, Wear Forever Cookware: You Don’t Even Need a Stove! Just put the food in and it will cook radioactively right there on the counter!
Doug: You don’t need lights, you have glow-in-the-dark! That’s a little far-fetched, but this is reality!
Roger: Doctor, when you went in and started to clean this stuff up, you know what the hazards were, you knew what the risks were, right?
Doug: No we didn’t. Unfortunately.
Roger: You read me a letter that said…
Doug: We found out once we got there. We didn’t know the first thing about it. When we got there the only indication I had ever heard of this stuff, because they didn’t tell up about uranium munitions when we were going to school studying this stuff.
I got a letter from the Surgeon General of the United States Army Health Physicist in December 1990. It said, “Think about depleted uranium.” Okay, what’s this? Then we get assigned to clean up this mess. When we went up there to clean up the mess and saw what we had, one of our other senior individuals on the team looked at the whole thing and said, “Oh my God!” because we had individuals running around without respiratory or skin protection, inhaling and ingesting it, getting into wounds. We had soldiers who were wounded who got no care. We had the enemy that to this date does not have any proper care. I’m a soldier and I’m going to go out and kill the enemy or shoot them; but, if they’re wounded and they’re alive I’m going to give them a band aid because that’s what’s right, morally and ethically.
We did it in Puerto Rico in February this year! Okinawa several years ago.
Roger: The Puerto Ricans have raised a little hell about it, too!
Doug: They’ve been a little bit mad because there’s people dead down there! They should be!
Roger: Well, in Puerto Rico we just say “shut up” or we’ll cut off your food stamps, that’s it. You’re laughing; but, I mean we have complete control over them. That’s not the case in Yugoslavia.
Doug: What’s happened with heroes in the United States, the ones who raised the concern? These are the military’’ own experts; physicians and scientists. They lost their jobs! We just had a top notch scientist who was working on this; doing the medical correlations, verifying that the Iraqis and everybody else is sick. U.S. warriors. Canadians, British, everybody is sick! He lost his job about four days ago because he’d been speaking up. They reached out with that long arm and said, “you have to shut up and if you don’t, you lose your job.” Lo and behold, this world class, famous scientist lost his job because he was trying to protect the citizens of the world!
Roger: Are there any private entities that are interested in working on this?
Doug: We wish we could get some money. We’ve got to figure out some way to get medical care. There’s a lot of groups going over to Serbian Kosovo. They’ve been calling asking “how do we clean up, how do we identify it?” We put that all together for the U.S. Dept. of Defense in December, 1995. We not only have not taught our own warriors, we didn’t teach any of the other NATO troops to take care of it, and they were all involved in the development when I put this stuff together in 1995.
Now we have to tell everybody else because unless we physically go in there with the right equipment, identify the contamination, and it’s not just uranium, it’s a whole wholesale of hazardous materials, isolate and segregate it and physically remove it.
Roger: That bothers me. Physically remove it to where? Where does it go?
Doug: That’s the problem. The 24 vehicles we brought back to the United States took 3 years to clean up. They were able to clean up some of the equipment. They basically buried the contamination in South Carolina. They just dug a big hole and buried it.
Roger: All our friends in South Carolina love to hear that!
Doug: That’s what happened.
Roger: They thought the fish were getting this weird virus from pig doo-doo and it’s probably from uranium leaching into the ocean!
Doug: More than likely, it probably is. Because we never got the health care for the friendly fire casualties or the recovery team personnel or the other thousands of people who went on the “Tours R Us”… You know, after the war everybody wanted to go and see the destroyed stuff. They jumped on trucks. They jumped on buses. They went up there. We had soldiers picking up uranium munitions all over the place. We had children, women, everybody picking stuff. This stuff looks really neat, okay? They’re climbing on the destroyed tanks to this day!
Roger: Oh Lord!
Doug: The BBC was over there a couple weeks ago and I talked to them a couple days ago. They found contamination right now! They took scientists in and measured it! They saw it physically. The men, women and children are climbing all over this stuff!
Roger: So, when you put our the call, the alert, does anyone give you any hint it might be resonating with them in Washington? Or do you just feel like you’re talking to a doorknob?
Doug: A doorknob! They called me and three other individuals up to Washington to meet with the Presidential Oversight Board. They paid our way, okay? We gave the warnings, we talked about it and discussed the medical. This was back in April. We’d been giving them warnings for a long time before April. They kept saying, “We’ll never use it.” I’ve got all the e-mails and messages. “We won’t use it, we’re not using it. It’s not even over there.” Then all of a sudden, Voom! By George, we lied to you. We’ve been shooting everything up!
Roger: I remember reading about depleted uranium munitions in Kosovo. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, why? Why are we going to use uranium? Somebody’s going to suffer for years from that!” I guess I was right!
Doug: When we were up in Washington in April, one of the world’s foremost scientists in this field who works for the U.N. and led the team into Chernobyl, that disaster in Russia, that individual looked and said, “I guess this is just another of one of the Divine Right of Kings. You guys set yourselves up as kings so you can do whatever you want.”
NATO told the BBC, and this was astonishing, this is what got everything going over in Europe and they are really upset over there…. I’ll read this, it’s directly from Major Badger, he’s the representative for NATO in Europe. He’s talking about our scientists that found out all these people are sick and verified it and he goes in and says specifically:
“ To give you a good example, to give you a comparative example, the amount of uranium that would go into one glow-in-the-dark type watch is about the same amount of uranium it takes to harden one of these warheads.”
He’s talking about the 30 MM. So, this NATO representative deliberately lied to try to throw everybody off. First off, a glow-in-the-dark watch uses tritium paint. It doesn’t use uranium and a wrist watch sure doesn’t weight 0.6 pounds! This was right after they, General Wald, finally admitted they were using it and everybody was raising a stink.
They just continued on their merry way of lying to divert the attention that we we have just trashed an environment with uranium and other hazardous materials. We did it in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. We did it in Puerto Rico. We did it in Okinawa and we did it in numerous sites here in the United States!
At the sites we did here in the United States, there is not a single site; that’s the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland; Jefferson Proving Grounds, in Indiana southeast of Indianapolis; Ecklund Air Force Base in Florida, right down there by all those beautiful beaches; Nellis, Nevada Test Site out northwest of Las Vegas, and Yuma Proving Grounds. You cannot get into any of those areas where the uranium munitions have been spread without going through extremely high fences and guards with machine guns. Yet, we go over to Iraq and Saudi Arabia and spread this all over, we go to Puerto Rico and spread it all over, we go into Serbia and spread it all over.
Roger: Oh, my God! What a point that is! We protect it here with fences and armed guards and there, we just let them eat it! Just lick it off the dirt there folks! Wow! So, the troops we have are sick. They won’t get help because we don’t want to admit we’re responsible?
Doug: And, the civilians in Iraq and Kuwait are sick and our enemy warriors are sick, and now the Serbians are sick.
Roger: And our allies.
Doug: Absolutely! Now we’re going to send our troops into Serbia again without adequate protection, without the education and training we developed in 1995.
Roger: You know, you’re really starting to get me mad, Doug!
Doug: Well, it’s been eight years of my life! The headquarters of the Dept. of the Army said, “Hey, Rokke, fix this problem.” Then when I tried to and raised the concerns and got everything finished, they didn’t implement it. When I started saying, “Okay, guys! You’ve got to fix it! You’ve got multiple orders here!”
I’ll give you an example. We got direct written orders that numerous individuals throughout the Dept. of Defense; the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marines, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy have deliberately disobeyed and nothing’s happened! Yet, there was an Air Force B-52 pilot named Kelly Flynn who was cashiered out of the military because she disobeyed a direct order to not see her boyfriend. But, these guys disobeyed direct orders has resulted in DEATH!!!!!
Roger: But they did it for the good of America, for the good of the Army, for the good of the White House or whatever! That’s sick!
Doug: Kathleen Sullivan who is one of our major journalists here, she’s top notch, wrote a story in the San Francisco EXAMINER back in June 20, 1998. I’m going to give you an exact quote. This is astonishing!
“The Pentagon admitted this year that thousands may have been exposed…” this is referring to depleted uranium, and here’s the direct quote, “We probably should have done bioassays medical tests on some of the Gulf War soldiers but not all, said the Army’s Chief Radiation Safety officer. “We didn’t. In that sense, we didn’t follow Army regulation 40-5.”
This is the Pentagon’s top man for radiation safety admitted June 20, 2026 that they violated Army regulation and nothing’s happened! And, Kelly Flynn got cashiered out for disobeying a direct order not to see her boyfriend. Do you see the dichotomy?
Roger: Yes, I do! Let’s see if I can get some interested Americans lined up on the phones. 800-449-8255. Ladies and gentlemen, our guest is Dr. Doug Rokke. He’s the gentleman in charge of clean up. We left uranium messes all over Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq. Now, of course, we’ve done the same thing using uranium weapons in Slobodon Milosevic’s backyard over there in Yugoslavia. We just continue to spread this disease. If you’d like to talk about it, call 800-449-8255.
Mark in Grants Pass, Oregon. You’re on the radio. Hello.
Mark: I’m a former veteran. I guess I’m still a veteran. I want to answer the question Roger had about how come we don’t have so many people coming out and speaking up and saying, “Hey, this happened to me.” I’m a former veteran with a security clearance and some experience about why the Iran so-called “rescue attempt” failed and the debriefing about it. I have a little bit of qualifications to answer that question.
The answer is the NSA blackmail on the very oath a recruit takes when he joins the service. We were specifically told that what we were trained about, what we were about to experience, if it left the base, we would be held for treason punishable by death if you had a secret clearance.
So, the reason I haven’t come out….oh sure, down at the pool hall or something or at work, I hear a bunch of guys talking and I’ll say, “that’s not entirely true.” I’ll speak up and say, “It’s been my experience that this, that and the other happened.” How do I know that? Because I was there.
I have also been kind of under a, not really a threat, but a kind of a conscious fear that if I came out and wrote a Letter to the Editor about what I knew, my wife and kids would be in danger. I feel this today and I’ve been out for 20 years!
Roger: That’s kind of a paranoid way to live, Mark!
Doug: It’s accurate, unfortunately.
Roger: It’s accurate? Are you telling me that Mark’s life or his family’s life is in jeopardy if he talks about the things that he saw in the military?
Doug: In some cases, you know, if you’re dealing with things that are…..
Roger: No, no, no, wait doctor, please! Because what you’re saying is that the U.S. military would have those people harmed? Someone in the government…
Mark: Let me cut in here! The National Security Administration is an unbridled power in the United States. The White House can’t even really crack the whip on them. The National Security Administration is this elite force that supervises what they believe the Defense Department should do. So, when I got my clearance at 21 years old I was given, absolutely given a secret clearance. I was looking at this guy like, “What is this?” I had done no qualifications to get a secret clearance. I was 21 years old. I was Spec 4 in a tank batallion somewhere. After I received that clearance I was given a pass to see certain movies regarding Viet Nam, our action in Viet Nam. These were military documentaries, not civilian. How to act in future war. There was biochemical- nuclear agent training and it was explained to us what happened in the failed rescue attempt in Iran. I can understand that. We sent three different units; the Air Force, Marines and Army to go rescue our guys, with three different authentication calls. Somebody got the authentication call to abort. They were flying around trying to authenticate and the crashed into each other! I can understand that.
Anyway, back to my point about how come veterans just fade away. Number one, there’s so much they can’t comprehend that goes on to them while they’re in their military service that it’s a mind-twist anyway. They’re just looking forward to get away from it. When you get out and you’ve got some problems and need some help; mine was alcoholism and drugs and went to the VA to get some help, I was denied. They felt I did not have a serious problem or that my problems began before I joined the service. When I pursued this I was basically berated that ….
Roger: Alright, hold on! We’ve got to take a break but I don’t want to leave you in the middle of your point there. Dr. Doug Rokke, ladies and gentlemen. We’re talking about depleted uranium and now it’s spreading into some really odd discussions about what you face if you talk when you shouldn’t. We’ll talk to Dr. Rokke about that, too. Don’t go away.
(Commercial Break)
Roger: Welcome back to the Roger Fredinburg Show on the Talk Radio Network. If you’d like to join us in conversation with Dr. Doug Rokke you can do so. The subject before us is depleted uranium poisoning, I suppose is the proper term. Our friends and warriors and the citizens of the Gulf War and beyond, now in Yugoslavia, are suffering the same consequences, long term adverse health and environmental disasters all because we’ve got a bunch of idiots in the Pentagon who think polluting the world with uranium is a good thing, I guess.
We’ve got Mark on. Mark, I want to go back to what you said because it’s such a broad, sweeping statement and, if it’s true, the people of this country need to know it’s true. Are you telling me, Mark, that you honestly believe the NSA would do some dangerous, harmful thing, maybe kill your family and you, if you were to speak out about what you know?
Mark: No, no! Let me correct that, okay? They don’t identify themselves, “I’m with the NSA and if you talk I will kill you.” It’s nothing direct like that. It’s all in the oath you take. I was 21 years old. I was in an elite outfit.
Roger: What did you take an oath to do?
Mark: Well, first of all you just take the basic entry oath, “I will guard and protect with my life, the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” That’s the number one commitment and that’s for life! When you join the service, regardless of your discharge, if you have any conscience at all as a patriot, you have just promised your life to guard America, civilian or not.
Roger: All right. Doug, Dr. Rokke, what did you mean when you agreed with him?
Doug: What has happened is the scientists, the physicians that started speaking out about Gulf War illnesses and the environmental contamination, the disaster that was created; once they started speaking out they started losing jobs. They started getting discredited. So you’re looking at a mental and a monetary effect. Like I said, we just lost one of our topnotch scientists who just lost his job after 30 years as a professor.
Roger: How about Dr. Doug Rokke?
Doug: I’ve lost two federal jobs because I spoke out. Most recently I was attacked by a senior Army official on the open internet just about a week, two weeks ago.
Roger: I thought we were protecting whistleblowers now. We had whistleblower legislation and all that. Whistleblowers are supposed to get special treatment. What happened to that?
Doug: Forget it! Obviously, we’re never going to talk about classified information. We won’t do that because we are the patriots. We are the warriors. But, what we’re going to do is when we see something that’s morally or ethically wrong, we have to speak up. Those individuals that speak up today, especially with this whole thing on environmental contamination and Gulf War illnesses…
Roger: I don’t know how you tell who the enemy is anymore!
Mark: If I might say something, gentlemen. It becomes a stress factor. It destroys marriages. It messes up your relationship, like you said, with your jobs. I’m a professional operating engineer. Yet, I’ve been living in my car for two years. I hire on. My experiences check out. Within 6 weeks I’m laid off. The project’s a two year project. I don’t know why. My wife thinks I’m just a loafer and can’t keep a job. Boom! I’m divorced! Now, you cannot get an attorney without any kind of cash in the bank. So there you have it. Go ahead and speak out.
Roger: Wow!
Doug: We have warriors and physicians and scientists all across this nation who have had to fight this problem where they become sick. The bad thing about it, when a warrior goes to war, in order to get medical care at the VA or anyplace, they have to (inaudible) what’s called a Line of Duty Incident report which verifies their illness or injury was caused by military service.
Mark: Exactly! Time and place.
Doug: Time and place. Well, none of this was given. I’ve asked for that a million times and they still refuse to do it. As a consequence, when that warrior goes to the VA or goes to his private physician, they won’t have a clue what’s going on, they have to fight completely and continuously for medical care. We’ve got individuals who are absolutely exposed. They’ve got photographic evidence. They did the work. They were documented. They get billed and their wages have been garnished by the U.S. government to pay for medical care that they were owed!
Roger: Unbelievable!
Mark: This goes back to that liability thing. If we acknowledge a bunch of patients in the VA hospitals, then we’re going to be on the international media that we did something wrong. What you guys are speaking about, I was training for…one of my first classified training missions was depleted uranium tank rounds… what to do when you’re handling it, what to do if you got hit… and you’d better not leave the base and talk about it. You can’t tell this stuff to a bunch of young kids. This is pretty scary!
You can’t tell this information to a bunch of young kids and expect them not to confer with their buddies and say, “Hey! What do you think about that? Do you believe it or not?” Yeah, but you’d better keep your mouth shut because remember what they said, “If you break security you could be hung for high treason.” That’s the point I want to make.
Roger: All right, Mark! Thank you very much. Doug, do you think the retribution against you will go on? Will it be harder and harder for you to find employment and keep it?
Doug: No, not as far as employment because I’m fairly secure. But, it’s the idea that… one of our journalists, one of the really topnotch writers, a Pulitzer prize winner, Seymour Hersh, wrote a book called AGAINST ALL ENEMIES that came out last year. If individuals have not read that book, I totally recommend this book! It’s phenomenal!
Roger: I read his book, CAMELOT.
Doug: Absolutely! This is a Pulizer prize-winning investigative writer! He’s got a whole series of books. He also did MAI LAI about the Viet Nam War. The title AGAINST ALL ENEMIES came down because of the fact that when he started investigating and talked to everybody, it’s “Against all enemies, foreign AND domestic.” (emphasis added, ed) as our last caller just said.
When you see something that’s wrong, you have to take a moral and ethical stance and say, if we use uranium munitions, and we know it has adverse health effects, we need to provide good medical care. But, more important, if we know it contaminates the environment, we need to clean it up! So, if we decide to use it in combat to kill the enemy we have two obligations, medical care and environmental cleanup. However, if we don’t need to use that munition, or we look at the consequences : 4,500,000,000 years - indiscriminate against men, women and children —
MAYBE WE NEED TO FIND ANOTHER WEAPON!!!
There’s another memo that came to us in Saudi Arabia simultaneously with this … This is another one that’s totally astonishing! This came from Los Alamos National Laboratory. This ties it all together!
“There is a relatively small amount of lodality data for uranium penetrators; either the tank-fired long version or the gallier (sp?) fired from A10 close air support aircraft. The recent war has likely multiplied the number DU rounds fired at targets by orders of magnitude. It is believed that DU penetrators were very effective against Iraqi armor. However, assessments, as such, will have to be made. There has been and continues to be a concern regarding the impact of DU on the environment. Therefore, if no one makes a case for effectiveness of DU on the battlefield, DU rounds may be come politically unacceptable; and thus, be deleted from the arsenal. If DU penetrators prove their work during our recent combat activities, then we should assure their future existence (until something better is developed) through service and DoD proponentcy. If proponence is not garnered, it is possible that we stand to lose a valuable combat capability.” (emphasis added, ed.)
Then the last sentence is unbelievable! “I believe we should keep this sensitive issue at mind whenever aft or action reports are written.”
It was loud and clear to me, in our team in March, 1991, that we were only to report what was politically correct so it wouldn’t disrupt it. In 1992 the Assistant Secretary of the Army wrote another memo, almost identical:
“Please note that depleted uranium is fully supported by the Army as an item that gives the American soldier the winning edge on the modern battlefield. Thus, it is important to realize that the use of depleted uranium as carefully compared against all other materials and was determined to be superior.” (emphasis added, ed.)
This was included in the memo that started the major report, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES OF DEPLETED URANIUM USE IN THE ARMY. It was directed by Congress, by the Senate! However, when we went to do the report it was loud and clear, make it politically correct!
Roger: Dr. Doug Rokke, ladies and gentlemen. What an incredible, travesty! After the break we’ll ask Doug what will we do? How do we fix it? Is it fixable?
(commercial break)
Roger: Ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Doug Rokke is here. We’re talking about depleted uranium exposure by our troops and innocent citizens all over the world where we’re using this stuff! We’re using it everywhere it seems like. Doug, is something people can do? Is there information people can get hold of? Is there some way they can help?
Doug: Sure! Obviously, your radio network has been doing a lot. Mother Jones Magazine and their website, http://www.mojo.com/ has a lot of information. They’re doing tremendous work to help us. The National Gulf War Resource Center in Washington D.C., The Sword into Ploughshares organization in San Francisco and the Military Toxic organization up in Maine, the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) in London.
What we need to do is get word out to the United States government, to the President of the United States, that they need to complete the environmental cleanup of all uranium contamination at any site that has been used.
Roger: Well, let’s stop using it! Let’s come up with a better way.
Doug: Absolutely! We have to stop it. It has to be banned! From everything I’ve learned and I’ve seen because of the consequences of what I’ve learned over the last eight years, it has to be banned! It has to be stopped! In areas where we used it already, we have to complete the environmental clean up and we need to provide medical care for everyone who was exposed to it; who either inhaled it, ingested it in their food or water, or in the wounds.
Roger: If we’re responsible, then we have to take that responsibility seriously.
Doug: Absolutely!
Roger: (addressing another caller) Brian, in South Carolina.
Brian: Do you know exactly where that uranium was buried in South Carolina?
Doug: Yes, Barnwell, South Carolina.
Brian: I live in Spartanburg and we have a Camp Carl State Park. Some ammunition from one of the World Wars was buried there and we were notified it wasn’t dangerous. In just the last several years they’ve been digging it up. We’ve had deer by the truckload drop over dead! They’d walk out of the park and drop over dead! We were informed…no problem. I talked to a landfill attendant who worked at the park at the Camp Carl Landfill where we carried our trash. It was closed and still had plenty of space for more trash and debris. I have to recheck into that.
Doug: That’s what you’re dealing with, unexploded ordinance and there’s a whole bunch of toxics associated with that. In addition, there is ordinance that has radioactive components in it, that does contain uranium. The whole toxic network, and that’s beyond my level of expertise, there’s no doubt that has happened and will continue to happen until these areas are environmentally cleaned up.
Roger: (addressing the next caller) Mary in Memphis, Tennessee, we’re going to have a very short time, but go!
Mary: Is this the same stuff the British were talking about during the Bush administration called “spent uranium” that contaminated the underground drinking water and had horrible birth defects and real debilitating skin rashes?
Doug: Yes, ma’am.
Mary: I told Roger about that almost three or four years ago! I guess they refer to it as spent uranium and you’re calling it depleted uranium.
Doug: All it is is uranium 238, ma’am.
Mary: This is the same stuff we have at Oakridge that people are buy up? The middle easterners… If it’s that bad, are they able to extract the high grade uranium out of it?
Doug: The Tennessean up there has done tremendous stories. As you know, Oakridge has finally agreed to provide medical care for some of the people exposed to some of this about ….
Roger: Doug, I want to apologize. We’ve complete run out of time. I want to thank you, sir. God bless you in your quest. Let me know how I can help in the future. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s it for this evening. Until tomorrow night, God bless you all! God bless America! Good night everyone!
