Dear Reader,
When doctors and researchers talk about a cure for cancer, it usually involves the development of extremely risky drugs, ones that will probably kill just as many patients as they “cure.”
But what it all boils down to is preventing what kills 90 percent of those who end up dying from a malignancy: the “successful” metastasis of cancer cells.
That’s when cancer cells escape from the original tumor and set up shop in other parts of the body, frequently the liver. And while doctors can typically remove the primary tumor, these traveling cancer cells often become unstoppable.
Now, Duke University scientists have discovered what could very well be the most important finding to date about how to keep cancer from metastasizing.
And by taking a few simple steps to cut off the food supply these killer cells use to multiply and thrive, it may be possible to stop them right in their tracks… something you can start doing right away!

‘Like a kid in a candy store’

The process by which cancer cells “detach” from a tumor and make their way to a new location inside your body isn’t all that simple. It’s more like an evil alien traveling through a dark galaxy while having to evade the defensive force of your immune system — and then setting up a completely new “microenvironment” to live in.
Of course, these killer cells also need food once at their new location, which is where this exciting new research comes in – the discovery that what cancer cells love to eat most of all is fructose. That’s right… as in high-fructose corn syrup.
“When cancer cells get to the liver, they’re like a kid in a candy store,” said one of the Duke scientists. And fructose, which is stored in the liver, is the perfect fuel to “create building blocks for growing more cancer cells.”
Once these malignant cells “rewire themselves” to easily utilize that fructose, they can become “unstoppable,” the researchers found.
While this new information is vital to both scientists and cancer patients alike, it’s not the first time that fructose has been implicated in the development and progression of deadly cancers.
Almost two years ago, MD Anderson researchers found that “it was specifically fructose” that is responsible for triggering an increase in breast cancer and its deadly metastasis.
And in 2010, University of California, Los Angeles, researchers discovered that fructose was like rocket fuel for pancreatic cancer cells, which can easily use the sweetener to divide and multiply.
The scientists who conducted the UCLA study commented at the time that they hoped the federal government would make some effort to “step back on the amount of high-fructose corn syrup in our diets.”
Well, I don’t think there’s much chance of that happening. But that’s something we can put into action all on our own – the only help necessary might be a good pair of readers to take to the supermarket with you!
A few decades ago, all you had to do was avoid soda if you wanted to dodge HFCS. Now, however, it’s in foods from yogurt to bread to condiments like relish and ketchup.
The good news is that more and more food manufacturers are taking it out of their products than ever before, thanks to informed shoppers like us. But you still have to be on the lookout for other forms of fructose.
That means checking labels and steering clear of any foods or drinks with added “fruit sugar” or any form of HFCS (which might have a number after it, such as HFCS 90, which means it’s 90 percent fructose!) – not to mention “fructose” itself!
Other ingredients to avoid include crystalline fructose and agave syrup, which is also sold as a bottled sweetener and is almost 100 percent fructose.
But don’t avoid actual fruit (meaning the real deal, not some gummies or fruit strips). While it does contain fructose, it’s “packaged” by Mother Nature in a way that allows you to digest it in a different and healthier way.
Even though we might not have our hands on a cure for cancer yet, if lives can be saved by eliminating added fructose from our diets, that’s really all that matters.
To Stopping the Spread of Cancer,
Melissa Young

Fructose, Sweet and Deadly

* Do our loved ones & friends KNOW ? * Note taken from Health Sciences Institute e-Alert   –   Jenny Thompson   –   3/9/16

Dear Reader, If you or someone you love suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, you know it can be the worst kind of pain imaginable. It can make even the most simple activities — like opening a jar or taking the dog for a walk — nearly impossible. And over time, it can leave your joints permanently disfigured. But what if kicking one thing out of your diet could make the difference in whether you get RA — or not? Some new research has discovered that a very common food additive may be a chief suspect in triggering the disease. It’s one that’s put in scores of everyday foods, even ones that look like healthy choices. And the damage can start faster than you can say FRUCTOSE.

———————————————————————- Sweet and deadly —

——————————————————————- It’s hard to believe that one ingredient could be the cause of so many diseases and so much suffering. But it’s sure starting to look that way. Diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, obesity — and now RA. All those conditions have been linked to added fructose — mainly in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Sure, the corn refiners want you to believe that HFCS is Mother Nature’s gift to mankind. But as an eAlert reader you know that’s a big, fat, sticky lie. This stuff is straight from the laboratory — a man-made concoction that is making Americans fatter and sicker every single day. And just when I thought that more bad news couldn’t come out about HFCS, along comes this study. Researchers from two medical schools along with the University of Massachusetts found that women who drank HFCS-sweetened beverages just over five times a week were tripling their chances of developing RA. Just think about that — we’re talking about less than one can of soda a day. While the research focused on younger women, you can bet the damage is all the same no matter how old you are. You see, when your gut has trouble absorbing fructose (a problem that gets worse with age), it sends your immune system into overdrive. That causes something researchers call “fructose reactivity” in your GI tract. And the end result is lots and lots of inflammation — like the kind that can trigger RA and leave you with painful, swollen joints. Last year a study found that this same immune response to fructose can also be a major cause of chronic bronchitis. And it didn’t seem to matter if the study subjects were smokers or not. Just drinking at least five HFCS-sweetened beverages was enough to almost double the chances of having frequent attacks of bronchitis! So it’s obvious that now is the time to cut that added fructose out of your diet once and for all. And here’s how to do that:

  • Check labels for HFCS, fructose, fruit sugar and crystalline fructose. Especially check processed foods, including some you’d never expect have fructose, like TV dinners.
  • Don’t fall for the agave syrup myth. The stuff is practically 100 percent fructose.
  • Remember that the fructose in fruit isn’t what’s bad for you. Mother Nature made sure that fruit comes packaged with fiber that slows the absorption of fructose as you digest it.

Fructose and Kidney Stones in Youngsters

Do our loved ones & friends KNOW ?

  • Note taken from Health Sciences Institute e-Alert – Jenny Thompson – 1/20/16

    Dear Reader,

They can feel like tiny razor blades are working their way through your back or stomach. The pain can be so excruciating that sometimes even morphine won’t touch it.
It’s the kind of thing you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy — let alone a small child.
But doctors are warning that the number of young children coming down with kidney stones is going through the roof. Some kids are even being wheeled in for surgery to have their stones removed.
It’s a problem that seems to be getting worse every year. And the culprit may be a dangerous sweetener I’ve been warning you about for years.

The stone age

For decades doctors hardly ever saw children with kidney stones.
Now they’re treating them all the time, according to pediatric urologist Dr. Gregory Taisan.
One of those children is Victoria Tappan, who was just 12 years old when she was rushed to the hospital with her first kidney stones. The poor girl has had six surgeries to remove stones since.
Dr. Taisan and his colleagues recently pored through 15 years’ worth of medical records on more than 150,000 patients. And they found that the rate at which kids are getting kidney stones is increasing nearly 5 percent every single year.
So what’s changed between 30 years ago — when you practically had to be at least 40 to have a kidney stone — and now?
Kids are eating more fructose than ever.
I’ve told you before how processed fructose — like high fructose corn syrup — can cause everything from liver damage to aggressive cancer.
And it looks like you can add kidney stones to the list.
You see, there are basically two types of kidney stones — ones that are made of calcium and oxalate and ones that are crystallized uric acid.
But fructose doesn’t discriminate. It can cause both.
Processed fructose (such as HFCS, not what you’ll find in fruit) can cause your body to produce high levels of both oxalate and uric acid, which can send your kidney stone risk skyrocketing.
And this isn’t exactly new information, either. One big study out of Harvard two years ago found that people who drink soda, which is usually loaded with HFCS, have a 33 percent higher risk for developing kidney stones.
HFCS has only been in the food supply since the 1970s, which may explain why a generation or two ago kids never got kidney stones.
But these days, HFCS and other types of processed fructose are everywhere. You’ll find fructose in everything from soda to cookies to even certain types of pickles.
Even drinks you might think are healthy, like Vitamin Water, contain crystalline fructose — a sweetener that’s 99 percent fructose. That makes it even higher in fructose than HFCS!
Whether we’re talking about kids or adults, once you have a kidney stone there’s a 50 percent or greater chance that you’ll have another one in the next five years. And none of us want to go through an ordeal like that again.
That’s why, along with avoiding fructose like the plague, these three tips can help prevent another kidney stone incident — whether you’re 8 or 80!

  • Drink more water — but make sure it’s the real deal, the old-fashioned kind that isn’t sweetened.
  • Take magnesium and B6 supplements, which have been found to cut the chances of a painful kidney stone recurrence by up to 90 percent.
  • Stock up on phytate-rich foods, like whole grains, nuts, seeds and beans. Research out of Harvard found that they can lower your risk of kidney stones by almost 40 percent.

To Your Good Health,
Jenny Thompson

Swap the sugar for spice to keep breast cancer at bay
What are little girls made of? If the old saying is to be believed, it’s sugar and spice and everything nice.
Well, ladies, I hope you became a little less sweet as you grew up — because sugar can give you something a whole lot worse than cavities, pimples, and a muffin top.
It could give you breast cancer!
If there’s anything out there that loves sugar more than your sweet tooth, it’s a tumor. While some cancers love it more than others, new research finds that breast tumors are like kids in a candy store.
They just can’t get enough of the sweet stuff.
The more sugar you feed yourself, the more you feed your tumor — and a new study on mice shows exactly how.
According to the research, sugar kicks off an enzyme signaling process in tumor cells called 12-LOX and stimulates the production of a fatty acid called 12-HETE.
In plain talk, you’re giving a tumor just what it needs to grow, grow, grow.
In the study, nearly twice as many mice on a high-sugar diet developed breast tumors when compared to mice on a diet low in starch. The mice also developed more lung metastases, too.
The researchers tested different levels of sucrose and fructose and found that the higher the fructose, the more fuel the tumor gets.
This is particularly alarming, since the most common form of sugar in the Western diet is high-fructose corn syrup, which is used in everything from soda to salad dressing.
And that, my friend, could be why more than 40,000 women die of breast cancer every year.
For the most part, breast cancer is non-aggressive and, in most cases, just needs to be left alone. But if you’re stuffing sugar down your gullet, you just might wake up that sleepy tumor.
And once it’s alert, it could turn into a cold-blooded killer.
Yes, sugar is pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of everything nice…but stick with the spice, because spices can do so much more than add some zing to your meals.
They can actually FIGHT cancer!
One spice in particular, turmeric, contains a compound called curcumin known to choke tumors until they drop dead. It’s widely used in Indian food, but if you can’t stomach curry, it’s also available as a supplement.
I’ve got another use for turmeric — scroll down for more!
Is this the real reason you’re depressed?
If someone asked “How are you?” right now, what would you tell them?
Maybe you’ve been feeling a little blue…but you haven’t wanted to say anything about it.
It’s no big deal, right? Everybody gets sad now and again. We all have our good days and bad days.
But if you find the blues have been hanging around for more than just a few days…maybe more like a few weeks or months…you could be suffering from a serious medical condition.
You could be experiencing depression.
But before you let a doctor put you on one of those over-prescribed anti-depressants that throw a wet blanket over your brain chemistry, you should know that the root cause of your depression may not be “in your head.”
New research shows how inflammation can cause depression…and if you already have depression, inflammation can dial the misery index up an extra notch or two.
We already know that chronic inflammation can kick off lots of other chronic diseases. It plays a key role in arthritis, heart disease, dementia, and more.
And if you’ve got depression, your levels of two troublesome inflammation markers — C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) — could be sky high. A new review of 200 studies finds depressed patients have up to 50 percent higher levels of CRP and IL-6.
Antidepressants will do little to nothing to alleviate depression accompanied by inflammation, according to the study in the American Journal of Psychiatry — not only because they don’t even touch the root cause of the depression, but also because antidepressants do little to nothing against ANY form of depression.
So instead, the researchers suggest you gobble some anti-inflammatory painkillers such as NSAIDS, try yoga, and meditate.
Give me a break already!
You shouldn’t have to face the risks that come with pain pills, and you certainly don’t need to light a scented candle, chant some nonsense, or sit in a ridiculously uncomfortable position on the floor.
All you need are some natural inflammation-fighters, and one of the best of the bunch is curcumin — a compound found in turmeric, the Indian spice that gives curry its color.
Curcumin has even gone head to head against Prozac in a clinical study…and won!
But don’t stop there — give your brain an even better boost with the omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon and the B vitamins in steak.
With some food for your mood,
Jack Harrison
