Elle Magazine Tweets Fake Kanye News to Get People to Vote

Elle held its own voter registration drive by tweeting fake news about Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian with a link that sends users to a voter registration site.

“Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are splitting up,” read the tweet from Elle with what appeared to be a news article about the split.

However, when users click the link, they are redirected to the “When We All Vote,” a nonprofit that bills itself as “non-partisan” but has several liberal co-chairs.

When We All Vote’s co-chairs are some of America’s most trusted voices, including Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monáe, Chris Paul, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

In the pitch to convince users to register the site plays up the women in politics angle that Democrats are hoping on capitalizing on in November.

“So far in the primaries, women have beat long-time incumbents and created historic races, all while redefining what it looks like to be a woman in politics.

“And now you have the opportunity to vote for them, or whomever you choose, in the midterm elections. No matter your party or your state, it’s more essential than ever to make your voice heard. Take a few minutes to complete the form below, and be sure to cast your vote on Nov. 6.”

The stunt received mixed reviews on Twitter with many users upset that Elle stooped to using clickbait to try and get people to register to vote.
